MONTGOMERY —
The Barr-Reeve Vikings had two very different halves of basketball, but they still added up to a Barr-Reeve victory.
The Vikings (15-2) ran away with the first half, on their way to a 65-43 win over Springs Valley.
The Vikings took advantage of 15 first-half turnovers and built a 31-14 lead, however, Barr-Reeve made its share of turnovers in the second and won a much closer 34-29 second-half victory over a hard nosed Valley (3-12) squad that lost a two-point game to Loogootee a week ago for coach Josh Thompson.
“We knew a game like this might be out there,” said B-R coach Bryan Hughes. “Quite frankly, we have played very good basketball lately. It was still a 20-point win, so I can’t be too upset.”
The Vikings got 19 points from Addison Wagler, who hit five 3-pointers in the game. They also had a double-figure effort from point guard Matt Swartzentruber, and 11 each from Jamal Wittmer and Addison Wagler.
Barr-Reeve roared out to a 7-0 lead and ended up going into the second quarter with a 17-8 advantage.
Barr-Reeve opened with a 7-10 mark from the floor in the opening quarter and were 5-8 in the second.
Turnovers allowed the Vikings to continue the scoring parade in the second, as Wittmer and Ashton Wagler both drained long 3-pointers.
The Vikings did put up 20 points in the third quarter, but Valley was able to counter with 16. B-R turned the ball over five times in the third quarter. Levi Weddle had eight of his Black Hawk leading 17 points during the quarter, but Addison Wagler and Swartzentruber added five each to counter.
“We were careless with the ball. There really isn’t a better word for it than careless,” said Hughes. “We didn’t have the edge or the focus and that happens sometimes when you are dealing with high school kids.”
The final quarter was just as tight, but the Vikings got a chance to work in a lot of players in the final five minutes.
“I though Valley’s quickness matched up pretty well with us,” said Hughes. “They got their hands on a lot of balls. I think there were a lot of situations that guys would like back, but we are happy to be 15-2 and we know we have two big conference games left. That is important because we control our destiny in the conference.”
Also scoring for the Vikings were Jon Gingerich with seven, while Heath Graber added two, and Myron Stoll and Jacob Bledsoe had one each.
Valley’s Ethan Galloway followed Weddle’s 17 with 15 of his own.
Barr-Reeve did suffer from the free throw line, hitting just 8-17.
The Vikes travel to Monroe City on Thursday to face South Knox.
The Vikings won the JV game, 59-29 with Brandon Wagler getting nine, Stoll getting eight and three others with six.
