Hatchets clip Golden Aces, ND football postponed

WASHINGTON — Washington handed Mount Carmel, Ill., a three-set Big Eight Conference defeat in volleyball at the Hatchet House Thursday for the team’s senior night.

The Hatchets defeated their co-conference member, 25-16, 25-7, 25-16.

Amber Taylor had 15 assists and four aces for Washington. Rachel Chattin added 15 kills and eight digs.

Lions defeat Stars at Butcher

LOOGOOTEE —Class A No. 5 Loogootee defeated Bedford North Lawrence, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19, Thursday.

Christina Ziegler had 13 kills, Michala Beasley 12 and Abby Ackerman 10 for the Lions (24-4). Demi Richardson had 37 assists, Kailye Robbins six digs and Waylee Wagoner four. Remington Wagler had six service points.

Registration for Arvin race

Registration for the Race for the Son is underway.

The race is to fund the Derek Arvin Scholarship for Washington High School students. The vent begins at 10 a.m. Nov. 3 at the Eastside Park shelter house.

The race is a 5K Run/Walk. Registration cost is $25.

Persons wishing to participate may register by going to aracefortheson.com. Registration will also held at the park beginning at 9 a.m. on the day of the race..

Spring travel league tryouts

Washington is hosting spring travel team baseball tryouts for players ages 9-12 (2013 league age).

Tryout dates are Thursday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., and Oct. 14 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the little league fields.

The tryouts are conducted by the high school coaching staff.  Players need only to be present for one date. One team per age is planned if group numbers cooperate.

Games are played on weekends from late March through early June.

Players will be able to play in leagues without conflict to league schedules.

    A Washington girls soccer call-out meeting will be held Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Lena Dunn cafeteria. The meeting is for girls entering 7th-12th graders who are interested in junior high and high school soccer.

    Loogootee’s Zach Wagler placed second and fourth in two events at Thursday's boys track sectional.
    Wagler placed second in the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:33.15, and was fourth in the 3,200 meters in 10:21.

    Bloomfield eliminated North Daviess, 4-1, Wednesday in the opening round of the girls tennis sectional.
    Madison Reed-Taylor Jeffers won for North Daviess at first doubles, defeating Lexi Place-Emily Bucher, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
    In singles, Cari Jo Wilson, Brytni Bray and Nicole Woodruff were defeated, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively.
    Caitlin Chestnut-Michael Sprinkle were also defeated at second doubles in straight 6-2 sets.
