WASHINGTON —
Washington head coach Alicia Hand knew the cross town matchup would be a big game, and her team responded accordingly.
Washington defeated Washington Catholic in three consecutive games (25-9, 25-13, 25-13) Thursday evening at the Birdcage.
The Hatchets came in knowing they needed to take care of business and get out with a win against the Cardinals. Hand said she wanted her team to come in focused and that’s exactly what she got.
“We came in and played hard the three games, we knew it was cross-town rivals so it was a big game,” Hand said. “We wanted to come in and play what we know, what we’re capable of doing, and that’s exactly what they did.”
The Hatchets got a total team effort across the board with Rachel Chattin, Paige Hawthorne and Araina Fidler adding five digs apiece. Megan Arnold added two blocks, Amber Taylor added 11 assists and Rachel Chattin had 10 kills. As Washington heads toward the postseason, Hand is very happy with the progress her team has made now at the end of the regular season.
“We have seen so much more improvement in every game that we’re playing,” Hand said. “They’re fixing the things that we need to fix, we’re working hard in practice and every game we see more and more improvement each time they come out.”
The Cardinals, winless on the season, fought all night, but the Hatchets were just too talented. The Cardinals got three assists from Sarah Witchman, six digs from Mary Ann Witchman and two kills from Cheyenne Stone.
“We have been stressing all year staying up tempo and no matter how bad you’re getting beat staying at an even keel,” Wild said. “Staying in the game, physically and mentally, whether you’re getting beat by 20 points or not. That’s what we have been stressing all year is to try to keep a positive attitude.”
Earlier in the year Wild said he didn’t care if his team won a game all year as long as the Cardinals are improving. With six games left before the sectional, that stance hasn’t changed.
“We’re actually in a new rotation offense and defense right now and we’re still learning the ins and outs of it,” Wild said. “Considering that they are playing well together and enjoying each other, they are progressing in that extent. There are still certain things that they fall asleep on that they need to stay consistent on throughout the match.”

WHS camp is Monday
The Washington Hatchet's Summer Tennis Camp begins Monday at the Lena Dunn Elementary School courts.
Boys and girls entering grades three through eight this coming school year wishing to participate may register when the camp begins at 9 a.m. The camp continues each day until 10:30 a.m. through Thursday.
Each player should bring a racket (one can be provided), a towel and a water bottle.
The cost of the camp is $25 per person. Checks should be made to WHS Boys Tennis. -
Washington Catholic High School is seeking coaches for the fall season.
Coaching positions open include: varsity and junior varsity volleyball; junior high volleyball, and junior high boys soccer.
