MONTGOMERY —
Linton coach Brad McKinney might be wondering if there is light at the end of the tunnel, after completing a 1-20 season with a 55-17 loss to Class A No. 2 Barr-Reeve on Thursday at Kavanaugh Kourt.
The answer is yes — and all he needed to do was look at the opposite bench.
It was just nine years ago when B-R coach Mark Holt was 2-19 in his first season as B-R’s girls’ coach. However, since then Holt has gone 129-47 and has consistently coached one of the state’s top five teams.
The team added a new wrinkle of success Thursday, as the win over Linton pushed B-R to 20-0 giving the basketball program its first-ever undefeated regular season, as well.
“We started at the very bottom of the shaft that first year, but moved to 9-13 the second year and got our first marquee win over Pike Central in triple overtimes,” said Holt. “However, we have been on pretty solid footing since year No. 3. We have felt like we have put teams out there that were capable of winning 14 or 15 games. We think we have established a pretty good foundation.”
However, Thursday night belonged to the five seniors who played their final regular-season game.
Since Tya Harmon, Haley Taylor, Kayti Taylor, Lindsey Graber and Katelyn Graber began as freshmen, the Vikes have posted a 78-10 varsity record.
Harmon, who has been the team’s leading scorer and rebounder had 15 in the game against Linton.
“Tya has had a tremendous senior year,” said Holt. “She is a phenomenal athlete, who also plays basketball,” said Holt.
Senior Kayti Taylor ended the night with four points in her final regular season game.
“Kayti is one of those girls who have gotten better and better every year,” said Holt. She understands her role perfectly. She knows she is going to guard the post player, rebound, play defense and take her shots when she gets them,” added Holt.
Haley Taylor has continued to be a big part of the Viking success story, in spite of dealing with the recovery of her mother who was involved in a serious car accident earlier in the school year.
“Haley hadn’t played since her freshman year, but when Alexis Johnson left, she stepped right in and filled that role perfectly,” said Holt. “She has been through a lot of personal adversity, but she has handled it with a positive attitude. We had always hoped she would come back out,” said Holt about Taylor, who had six points for the night.
Lindsey Graber had five points for the Vikes against Linton, but Holt considers her the template for the team.
“She epitomizes what this team is about,” added Holt. “She is 5-1, 70 lbs., but you wouldn’t want to meet her in a dark ally. She brings it every night, every possession.”
Holt said Katelyn Graber had not played a lot of basketball, but came back out this season.
“She played a lot of JV this year, but did get some varsity minutes, but she kept working at it and I think she enjoyed her time with us and got better and better,” said Holt.
Sophomore Jenna Knepp also had a great night, posting 15 points in the 38-point win. Also scoring for the Vikes was Alexis Chestnut and Cori Cummings with three each, while Hope Alford and Tracy Graber had two each.
The Lady Vikings are off until the semifinal game of the Barr-Reeve Sectional next Friday.
