Cougars advance with easy win

DUGGER — Another matchup against Union Dugger, another easy victory for the North Daviess football team.

North Daviess (4-6) defeated Union Dugger (2-8), 40-12, in the first round of the Class A sectional 40 at Bulldog Field behind four rushing touchdowns from junior running back Colton Lengacher. The win was the second blowout win for North Daviess against the Bulldogs this season after they won, 42-14, Sept. 14 at Union Dugger.

The Cougars got on the board quickly by taking their opening drive 65 yards on 10 plays, capped by a one-yard touchdown run from quarterback Brady Helms.

The Bulldogs answered in two plays before the North Daviess defense knew what had happened.

Bulldogs’ senior quarterback Sterling Langley connected with Trey Snead on a 37-yard pass to the North Daviess 12-yard line on a well-executed flea flicker. The next play, Langley found Darrell Faulkner in the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown pass to tie the score at six.

North Daviess responded with another 10-play 65-yard touchdown drive to retake the lead, this time capped by a Lengacher six-yard scamper on a fourth and two. On the drive, the Cougars junior running back ran seven times for 53 yards to give North Daviess a 12-6 advantage.

The Bulldogs took the ensuing possession to the Cougars’ 41-yard line where they failed to convert a fourth and six on a Langley incomplete pass.

The North Daviess offense couldn’t get anything going and were forced to punt. After taking possession at their own 28-yard line, on the next three plays the Bulldogs lost 18 yards.

After a holding call on a first down run by Faulkner, running back Mike Fogelsong fumbled at the line of scrimmage, and Faulkner tried to make something out of nothing and lost 10 yards taking the Bulldogs offense all the way back to their own five-yard line. The Bulldogs got some breathing room with a four-yard run to the nine-yard line by Langley.

Langley then attempted a punt that went off the side of his foot and went out of bounds at the 10-yard line for a net punt of one-yard. The Cougars took possession and Lengacher ran for a 10-yard touchdown, his second of the night to give the Cougars a commanding 18-6 lead.

After forcing another punt, the North Daviess offense took a complete stranglehold of the game on a 77-yard touchdown drive ending with Lengacher’s third touchdown of the night from five yards out giving North Daviess a 26-6 advantage, a lead they would take into halftime. With the exception of the Bulldogs first offensive possession of the game, the Cougars defense completely dominated the first half allowing only four first downs, and intercepting Langley once.

North Daviess continued to add to their lead in the second half behind, while getting Helms and a few other starters some rest. Lengacher scored his fourth touchdown of the night from two yards out and Logan Turpin added a seventh touchdown to give the Cougars an even 40 points. With 8:07 left in regulation, Langley connected with Faulkner for their second touchdown of the night to cut the lead to the final margin of 40-12.

North Daviess will take on the winner of the Wood Memorial/Tecumseh game, two teams they defeated this season. The Cougars defeated Tecumseh, 34-28, in their season opening win Aug. 17, and Wood Memorial Sept. 28, 43-7, the Cougars last victory before Friday’s first round triumph.

The North Daviess softball team (20-7) defeated Jasper 8-4 Friday night at North Daviess on a Senior Night that meant so much to the home team.

Wagler placed second in the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:33.15, and was fourth in the 3,200 meters in 10:21.

Bloomfield eliminates ND
Bloomfield eliminated North Daviess, 4-1, Wednesday in the opening round of the girls tennis sectional.
Madison Reed-Taylor Jeffers won for North Daviess at first doubles, defeating Lexi Place-Emily Bucher, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
In singles, Cari Jo Wilson, Brytni Bray and Nicole Woodruff were defeated, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively.
Caitlin Chestnut-Michael Sprinkle were also defeated at second doubles in straight 6-2 sets.
