Vikings win XC invite

MONTGOMERY — Connor Sorrells, Damon Pruett and Jarit Perkins ran to  the first three finishes to lead the Barr-Reeve Vikings to a win in the boys race at their invitational Tuesday.

But, just as importantly for Washington runners, the Hatchets placed third 43 points in front of fellow Big Eight Conference member Jasper in the race.

Washington’s Brandy White turned in a second consecutive good run with a third-place finish in the girls race.

The Vikings clipped fellow Blue Chip Conference member South Knox 50-58 to take the team championship. South Knox placed three runners in the top 11 positions, but couldn’t overcome the Barr-Reeve trio.

Washington’s KC Heller ran fifth to pace a Hatchet team looking for an opportunity to test itself against Jasper. The Wildcats were the last Big Eight team Washington had not faced during the season.

Austin Gray and Logan Sipes were close behind in 11th and 12th. Drew Brothers missed Saturday’s run at the South Knox Invitational (a traditional sectional preview that attracts a large field), but returned at Barr-Reeve with an 18th that helped cement Washington’s race.

Washington Catholic’s Sam Baker placed 10th after placing 25th at South Knox.

White’s third-place finish followed her fifth last Saturday at South Knox. The Washington sophomore is running her first cross country season, and appears to be ready to take a spot from the sectional as an individual.

Classmate Madison Decker missed the meet due to a hip injury.

Washington Catholic’s Sarah Wichman also missed South Knox, but came home 30th, Cassidy Brothers was 36th for Barr-Reeve, and Jenna Meadows ran 42nd for North Daviess.

Area teams now prepare for conference meets. Barr-Reeve and North Daviess do compete in the Jasper Invitational Sept. 25.

But Washington has the Big Eight meet Sept. 29 in Evansville, Barr-Reeve hosts the Blue Chip meet Oct. 4 where Washington Catholic runs.

North Daviess has the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference meet Sept. 29 at Shakamak.
