WASHINGTON —
The Owen Valley Patriots had found themselves 0- for-the-21st Century, at least as far as their match ups with the Hatchets have gone.
However, the Washington (8-9) winning streak over the Patriots (6-12), which had been 12 games, ended with a 46-44 buzzer-beater loss in the Hatchet House.
“The kids don’t know about records or streaks. This is a new team and a different year,” said WHS coach Gene Miiller. “Owen Valley just came out and earned it. They out played us and they were better than us tonight.”
In a rare Thursday night duel, the Hatchets were outscored 20-9 in the final quarter, giving the Patriots their first win over Washington since the Patriots had been re-added to the schedule in 1999.
“In the fourth quarter, we just caved,” added Miiller. “They were much more aggressive and hungrier than we were. They were the better basketball team, especially in the fourth quarter.”
Although Washington led almost the entire game, Owen Valley won the second half, 29-19. Washington was also hurt by a 6-13 night from the free throw line and a 12-7 turnover advantage.
Dylan Ervin did have his fifth straight game with 20 or more points, but only five of the 20 came in the second half. Cullen Arnold and Michael Daudy also posted eight points each and combined for 13 of the team’s 25 boards.
Trent Whiton led Valley with 17 points, while Jansen Hight added 10.
The Hatchets were strapped with three early turnovers, however Dylan Ervin began to take control on the offensive end. In the span of three minutes, Ervin had scored all 11 of Washington’s points, pushing the Hatchets from an 0-2 deficit to an 11-4 lead. Daudy added a late basket and four first quarter rebounds, sending WHS into the second quarter with a 13-8 margin.
Ervin added four more points in the second, but Tyler Stoll, Arnold and Daudy also contributed buckets, as WHS built a 25-17 lead at the half.
Owen Valley was able to break the Hatchets’ pressure early in the second quarter with two transition baskets and cut the lead to as few as six after Caleb Oldham hit a late 3-pointer, but Arnold was able to push it back to eight with a put back.
The Hatchets opened the third quarter with a brief shooting slump, missing their first three shots, while the Patriots were able to cut the lead back to four, 25-21. However, Daudy stopped the bleeding with a basket at 6:19. Arnold also added a pair of put backs giving Washington a 33-23 lead with 2:25 to play in the third. Cody Milligan added his first bucket of the game in the final minute, to send WHS into the final stanza with a nine-point margin.
Valley again opened with an early run, chipping the Hatchet lead back to 35-31 in the first two minutes. At 5:22, Hight and Nolan King cut the lead to just a point with free throws at 38-37, before taking its first lead of game on the next possession.
After an Oldham trey, Valley was able to knot the game at 42. The Pats then took almost a minute off the clock before scoring. Ervin responded with a basket in the opposite direction to knot the game at 44 with :9.1 left to play. However, after a foul, Josh Parker was able to get free for the bucket and the win with no time left on the clock.
Also scoring for Washington was Stoll with four, and Milligan and Andy Garland with two each.
Washington now travels to Southridge on Tuesday for a non-conference tilt with the Raiders.
“Turnovers and free throws hurt us. We made a lot of lazy bounce passes. Even when we were ahead, we weren’t playing well,” said Miiller. “We now have a couple of days to get ready for Southridge and that will be a tough game down there.”
The Hatchets also fell in the JV game, 41-37.
