ND wins tennis sectional semi

ELNORA — North Daviess will be out to defend its 2011 sectional title today after defeating Linton 4-1 in boys tennis semifinal action at Tony Steele Courts on Thursday.

For the second time this season, North Daviess (5-11) defeated Linton (1-12) by winning No. 2 and No. 3 singles and both doubles matches. In fact, aside from No 1. singles, none of the matches were close as the Cougars claimed those four matches while dropping just nine games.

Scott Woodruff claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win over the Miners’ Mitchell Cox at the second singles spot, while ND’s  Braden Lawyer defeated Zachary McGill by an identical score at No. 3 singles. In doubles action, the Cougar tandem of Lane Heshelman and Trevor Wikle claimed a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Dane Kanen and Andrew Woods, while No. 2 doubles went to the ND team of Lane Fulton and Tyler Hostetter 6-1, 6-0 over Dalton Van Patten and Rain Foster.

North Daviess coach Brock Higgins was pleased to see his team come out and take care of business quickly against the Miners.

“They played great. My main thing was, since we beat them earlier in the year, I was worried about coming with kind of a big head, of thinking we were gonna cruise to the finals,” said Higgins. “I stressed that to them, and I think they really focused and didn’t let themselves get that way. I wanted them to stay focused and not let up, and that's what they did.”

Just as it was in the regular season, Linton's only win came at No. 1 singles, but it wasn't easy for Cody Kolcher, the only senior in the Linton lineup, who defeated Evan Hawk 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 in the last match to be completed on the day.

“Evan had opportunities, he was up in both sets at times, and he just wasn’t able to hang on. That kid (Kolcher) is really mentally tough, he’s good at coming back from adversity like that,” said Higgins. “I’m really proud of the way that Evan played. I think there’s a lot of positives he can take into tomorrow night.”

ND will now attempt to avenge a 4-1 regular season loss to Bloomfield, and Higgins feels good about how his team is playing heading into the rematch.

“I think we’re playing really well. They beat us in the regular season,” said Higgins. “They’re considered the favorite, but I think we’ll have a small window of opportunity. Hopefully we can capitalize on it.”
