Hatchets start off with jamboree

WASHINGTON — In the final tuneup before the soccer season, the Washington boys and girls teams competed Saturday in the Big Eight Jamboree with both good and bad results.

During Saturday’s jamboree, both Hatchet teams matched up with Jasper, and neither came out on top in their exhibitions.

The boys fell 2-0 in their 45-minute match, which featured only a mix of starters and reserves for head coach Quintin Myers since not all varsity starters had completed their 10 official practices.

“We gave some players opportunities that normally wouldn’t have it, and some of those guys stepped up,” Myers said. “It gives us a chance to see Jasper, and they didn’t have their complete full lineup either. It was a nice opportunity to get out and play against someone other than ourselves.”

While the match against Jasper didn’t yield many results for the boys team, Hatchets’ girls head coach Lauren Hannan was very pleased about her team’s 1-1 tie. After allowing an early goal, Hannan’s team buckled down and seemed to play with more intensity the rest of the way, including a goal from freshman Shyla Sama.

“For a first game against a good team, they gave it everything they had,” Hannan said. “I’m so impressed and I can’t wait for the rest of the season.”

Hannan said she told her team that while allowing the early Jasper goal was unfortunate, it was a learning experience that will help them when they begin their 2012 season on Thursday at home against Castle.

“I told them the first five minutes is always the hardest in a game, because you’re nervous and trying to figure everything out,” Hannan said. “But even for the first five minutes, we went up against them and it seemed like we had the ball all the time. It just takes one slight mistake for them to score and it was just one slight mistake. We dominated almost the entire second half of the game completely.”

Hannan said that after every game there are things that could be done better, but she feels her team is in a good position to start the regular season.

“We have a few things we need to tweak and we have time before Thursday to get things better. I would say there’s definitely more positives than negatives,” Hannan said.

Myers said seeing his team without all his starters doesn’t help him gauge where they are as a team, but it provided things that they need to tighten up before Tuesday’s season opener against Princeton.

“We noticed we need to work on winning balls out of the air, especially in the back and playing to feet more,” Myers said. “Instead of just kicking it, we need to be finding someone to play to. It was a good learning experience. There were a lot of coaching points made.”
