Hatchets win home opener

WASHINGTON — It wasn’t pretty, but Washington prevailed.

The Washington girls’ basketball team defeated South Knox Tuesday at the Hatchet House 48-46 behind 13 points from Ally Hunsinger and 11 points from Audra Lane.

The Hatchets ran out to a 15-2 lead after the first quarter, and looked like they were on their way to a blowout victory. South Knox chipped away at the 13-point in the second quarter as they trailed 25-17 at halftime.

Washington took a seven-point advantage in the fourth quarter, and they stretched that lead to 38-29 lead in the opening minutes of the quarter. The Warriors answered with an 8-0 run to bring them the closest they had been since 2-0 in the first quarter. The Hatchets countered with a five consecutive points capped by a three-pointer from Hunsinger.

South Knox cut the lead to 48-46 in the final minute, but couldn’t get the big basket when they needed one. With 4.5 seconds to play Lupe Perez found Lane on an inbound pass where Lane got behind the defense. Lane missed a layup as time expired, but it didn’t matter as the Hatchets prevailed by two points.

  The Washington Hatchet's Summer Tennis Camp begins Monday at the Lena Dunn Elementary School courts.
  Boys and girls entering grades three through eight this coming school year wishing to participate may register when the camp begins at 9 a.m. The camp continues each day until 10:30 a.m. through Thursday.
