WASHINGTON —
Washington rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Southridge in the Hatchets’ season opener Tuesday.
The Raiders won the opening sets, 25-16 and 25-22, before Washington took the final three, 25-19, 25-18, 15-13.
Rachel Chattin and Paige Hawthorne each had 24 digs for Washington. Araina Fiddler added 23.
Jordan Carr added nine assists and Emily Sullender had two aces to go with four kills.
Megan Arnold had five blocks and four kills, Lauren Terry had five blocks and Chattin added three kills.
Cougars take opener
ELNORA — North Daviess defeated Shoals in four games to open its volleyball season Tuesday.
The Cougars dropped the opening set, 25-21, before winning the final three, 25-11, 25-18, 25-19.
Madison Reed had 21 assists for the Cougars. Lenzi Brewer added 12.
Larynda Keith provided 18 digs with Taylor Jeffers adding 13. Alexis Reed had nine.
Jeffers had 13 kills, Chandra Bruner six and Cari Jo Wilson and Janae Wagler five each.
Jessica Miller added three blocks with two each to Morgan Wadsworth and Wilson.
Jeffers had four kills and Miller three.
“We started off slow in the first set,” North Daviess coach Rebecca Hays said. “I think we were nervous. Shoals is greatly improved from last year. Their defense was impressive. We executed in the last three sets and got the win.”
North Daviess won the junior varsity match, 25-20, 24-25, 15-13.
Patriots nip Lions
LOOGOOTEE — Vincennes Rivet won the singles and Loogootee the doubles, giving the visiting Patriots a 3-2 tennis win Tuesday.
“I think we can be pleased with how close we came to knocking off a very good Vincennes Rivet team,” Loogootee coach Rick Graves said.
Dalton Robbins topped Conner Wittmer, 6-4, 6-2, Aaron Pea defeated Jesse Horney, 7-6 (3), 6-3, and Alex Stanger defeated Tylan Norris, 6-0, 6-2, to complete the Patriot sweep in singles.
Waylon Matthews-Gabe Nolley defeated Blake Mouzin-Nick Niehaus, 6-3, 6-0, and Tyler Booker-Will Nonte topped Mitchell Hamilton-Colin Wirth, 7-5, 6-2.
“I was really pleased with our doubles play,” Graves said. “Waylon and Gabe jumped on Rivet. It took a little time for Tyler and Will to come around, but once they got going, they played some good tennis.”
Hayden Bell won a junior varsity match for the Lions, as did Jordan Berry-Jayce Wagoner.
Tryouts Monday
Basketball tryouts for the 4th grade DistinXion travel team will be held Monday at 6pm in the DistinXion gym at Antioch Christian Church.
Any fourth grade boy in the Washington School corporation is welcome to participate.

Fall season planned
A fall softball season is being planned by the Washington Softball Association.
Registration fee for teams is $325. The deadline to register is Monday.
The league begins plays at Longfellow Park Sept. 4. Teams will play a 10-game schedule with a single elimination tournament scheduled for the end of the season.

WHS camp is Monday
The Washington Hatchet's Summer Tennis Camp begins Monday at the Lena Dunn Elementary School courts.
Boys and girls entering grades three through eight this coming school year wishing to participate may register when the camp begins at 9 a.m. The camp continues each day until 10:30 a.m. through Thursday.
Each player should bring a racket (one can be provided), a towel and a water bottle.
The cost of the camp is $25 per person. Checks should be made to WHS Boys Tennis. -
Washington Catholic High School is seeking coaches for the fall season.
Coaching positions open include: varsity and junior varsity volleyball; junior high volleyball, and junior high boys soccer.
