WASHINGTON —
Washington mistakes and Boonville quarterback Evan Hendrickson ruined a perfect night for football at Hatchet Hollow for the home faithful as the Pioneers claimed a 20-3 season opening win in Big 8 Conference football action on Friday.
Washington (0-1, 0-1) set up a pair of first half Boonville (1-0, 1-0) field goals with fumbles in the Hatchets‘ own side of midfield, and saw Hendrickson pass for 155 yards and direct two second half scoring drives.
Washington was able to drive the ball most of the night on the ground, with fullback Tyler Edmiston doing most of the damage. Edmiston carried 21 times, netting 115 of Washington’s 207 rushing yards, but the Hatchets were unable to finish off drives and get the ball in the end zone.
Boonville struggled early against the Hatchet defense, but as the game wore Hendrickson’s passing got the Pioneer offense moving. Overall, Washington was out gained 248-242.
Boonville picked up the game’s first touchdown when Andrew Arriago capped an 11-play, 87-yard drive with a five-yard run with 4:31 left in the third quarter. Jake McConnell’s point after gave the Pioneers a 13-3 lead. Seth Lowe added a 27-yard scamper late in the fourth quarter to finish off the scoring for Boonville.
Washington dominated the first half, out gaining Boonville 104-79, but the Hatchets trailed 6-3 after two quarters thanks mostly to WHS mistakes. A pair of Hatchet fumbles on Washington’s side of midfield set up field goals of 48 and 34 yards respectively by McConnell.
The Hatchet’s answered McConnell’s first field goal when Washington kicker Tyler Walls finished off a 16-play, 80-yard drive with a 34 yard field with 2:18 left in the first quarter to tie the score at 3-3. McConnell’s second field goal less than 2:00 into the second quarter handed Boonville a 6-3 lead.
Boonville made a bid to extend its lead just before halftime. With McConnell lining up for his third field goal try of the half on fourth-and-goal from the Hatchet five with under a minute to play, Washington was called for off sides. Giving up a field goal try by McConnell, Boonville accepted the penalty, moving the ball to the Hatchet three. But the penalty did not give the Pioneers a first down, and quarterback Evan Hendrickson’s pass into the end zone on fourth down was incomplete, leaving the score at 6-3 heading into the locker room.
Washington will host Evansville Bosse on Friday.
