Last week, Barr-Reeve head coach Bryan Hughes talked about the
athleticism of Northeast Dubois, but when game time rolled around, the
athleticism of Addison Wagler was what really counted.
The Class A No. 4 Vikings (7-0, 2-0 Blue Chip) defeated Northeast Dubois
(2-4, 1-1 Blue Chip) 72-55 Friday evening at Kavanaugh Kourt behind 31
points from Wagler.
Playing in the second conference game of the season for both teams, the
Jeeps struck first with a layup only ten seconds into the game to give the
visitors an early lead, which started a back and forth first half of play.
After a Northeast Dubois timeout with 2:29 to play in the first quarter,
senior Bryce Huebner made a three-pointer to give the Jeeps a 15-14
advantage. It would be its last lead of the night.
The Vikings scored four straight to end the quarter with a 18-15 lead, which
was extended to 22-15 early in the second quarter. The Jeeps continued to
fight, cutting the lead to 25-24, before Barr-Reeve scored six straight to
end the half with a 31-24 lead at halftime. Wagler had 12 points in the
first half, and he would continue his dominance on the block in the second
half by making four field goals in third quarter, and then five in the
fourth quarter, as the Vikings outscored the Jeeps 41-31 in the second half.
"Addison (Wagler) was pretty good there on the square," Hughes said. "The
use of the shot fake for a sophomore kid, he did a nice job. At 6-4, and
200-something pounds, I would consider him a strong player for us, but he¹s
also a finesse player. He¹s got great moves everywhere."
The Vikings 17-point victory was an up and down fast-paced battle that it
hadn¹t exactly experienced this season, and Hughes was pleased to see his
group rise to the challenge. Junior Micah Bullock scored 10 points, and
Heath Graber and Jacob Bledsoe tallied eight points apiece.
"We knew it would be a physical basketball game, that¹s the kind of kids
they have, and I think we have some physical kids," Hughes said. "I think we
needed a game like this. There were a lot of possessions, which I definitely
think is too our advantage. We just got things rolling."
With Friday¹s victory behind them, Hughes said he will have to pick his
spots for rest with Christmas only a few days away, and the Graber Post
Buildings Classic starting Dec. 27 at North Daviess.
"It makes it difficult to give them too much time off with how our schedule
is," Hughes said. "We¹re going to meet in the morning, I don't like giving
them Saturday's off, I don¹t want to give them two days off. We'll get the
soreness out in the morning, we'll go enough to get a sweat going. We'll
have to practice on Christmas Eve in the morning, and obviously we'll give
them Christmas off, and come back on Wednesday."
