WASHINGTON — Oliver J. Coers, 84, of Washington, passed away at 12:58 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Manor Nursing Home. Born May 18, 1928, in Breese, Ill., he was the son of Oliver C. and Louise (Hollencamp) Coers. He was raised in Breese and attended St. Dominic Catholic schools in Breese. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, where he served with the 23rd Infantry. He also was a recipient of a Purple Heart. He started his working career with the B and O Railroad and retired as an engineer from CSX Railroad in 1989. He was a member of the Washington American Legion, V.F.W., and Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the 40 and 8 of Vincennes and Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church. He was a charter member of the Washington American Legion Marching Unit. He is survived by his wife, Marian (Lapicola) Coers; one daughter, Janet Plahn of Vincennes; one son, Michael J. Coers of Washington; three grandchildren, Kathryn Plahn and Matthew Plahn, both of Evansville, and Elizabeth Plahn of Vincennes; one brother, Robert Coers of Belleville, Ill.; and one stepbrother, Charles Koerkenmeier of Breese. He is preceded in death by his parents; one son-in-law, Hank Plahn III; his grandmother; and two aunts. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, with Rev. Gordon Mann as celebrant. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. CST Friday at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Ill., with military honors. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. Memorial donations may be given to Washington Catholic Education Endowment, P.O. Box 916, Washington, IN 47501. Arrangements are being made through Ed Lee Mortuary.
