Marion ‘Pope’ Long

May 3, 1924 - Nov. 23, 2012

EAST MOLINE, Ill. — Marion “Pope” Long, 88, a kind, caring, gentle man, died Friday at Select Hospital, Davenport, Iowa. Born May 3, 1924, in West Chester, Iowa, he was the son of Hugh and Irma (Dayton) Long. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, serving on Tinian Island and was a tail gunner on B-29s. He married Hazel Louise Birlew on May 10, 1945, in East Moline. He worked 20 years for the former Rock Island Lines and later was superintendent of boxcar dismantling for Evan’s Railcar in Washington. Pope loved life, family and friends. He enjoyed travel, gardening, fishing and camping. He enjoyed tinkering in his garage and building one of a kind birdhouses. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Hazel; children, Susan (Steve) Doye of Moline, Beth Ann (Tim) Wittmer of Loogootee, Steven (Rita) Long of Washington, and Robert (Nedra) Long of Plainville; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen Gower, and a granddaughter, Amy Joy Long. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Greenview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, East Moline, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct military honors. Visitation is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Memorials may be made to Quad City Honor Flight. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.vanhoe.com
