Hallie Pearl Corn

Hallie Pearl Corn, 100, of Washington, died at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday at Washington Nursing Center.

Born Jan. 26, 1910, in Plainville, she was the daughter of John R. and Lydia B. (Howerton) Vowell.

She attended Plainville schools. She retired from UniRoyal as a machine operator, was a waitress at several restaurants and had been a caregiver. She was a member of First Christian Church, Dorcas Sunday school class, Eastern Star and had been a den mother of Cub Scouts.

She is survived by a daughter, Gwynavere Morton of Washington; sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald Chandler of Camarillo, Calif., and James A. and Rita Corn of Jasper; stepson and his wife, Richard and Toni Dear of Dorset, England; 11 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Joyce Vowell of Tucson, Ariz.; and a brother, Elwood Vowell of Bedford.

Her first husband, Ernest Chandler, whom she married July 30, 1931, is deceased. Her second husband, Maurice Eugene Corn, whom she married July 14, 1945, died Dec. 13, 1971. One son, Robert Chandler; sisters, Hazel Mowery, Alma Stroud and Alberta “Peg” Thompson; brothers, Ollie Burton, Bert Vowell, William Vowell, Keith Vowell and John Vowell Jr.; and one grandchild are also deceased.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Gill Chapel, with Rev. Byron Holtsclaw officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with an Eastern Star service at 3:30 p.m., and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
