ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Ralph A. Kerns, 79, formerly of Washington, passed away Tuesday at St. Louis University Hospital. He had resided the past five years at the Delmar Gardens Nursing Home in St. Louis. Born Dec. 1, 1932, in Martin County, he was the son of Alton and Lillian (Bauer) Kerns. Upon graduation from Shoals High School in 1950, he served in the United States Air Force in Korea. He retired in 1992 as manager of National Gypsum. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church Dubois Crossroad, Washington American Legion Post 121, Moose Lodge 1080, Fraternal Order of Eagles 414, and V.F.W. Post 3321. He is survived by two sons, Mark and Scott Kerns, both of St. Charles, Mo.; one daughter, Tamela Leaver of Baldwin, Mo.; one brother, Clarence Kerns of Mitchell; three sisters, Betty Crays of French Lick, Phyllis Wininger and Mary Rose Risner, both of Crawfordsville; eight grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, John Walter Kerns. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Queen-Lee Funeral Home in Shoals, with Pastor Mary Poston officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery Dubois Crossroads, with military graveside rites conducted by Shoals American Legion Post 61. Visitation is after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
