VINCENNES — Myrna Marlene Kimmel, 71, died at 5:14 p.m. Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Marlene, as she was known to everyone, was a 1955 graduate of Wheatland High School. Following graduation she attended Vincennes University. In 1957 she began her career in finance with a job at General Finance. Marlene later went on to manage Credit Thrift and then Personal Finance Co., retiring in 1996.
She was a member of Central Church of Christ. Her other memberships included the Red Hat Society and the ABWA.
A volunteer for the American Cancer Society, she also worked with Relay for Life. Marlene started the Reach for Recovery program for breast cancer patients at Good Samaritan Hospital.
She loved to travel and would “shop till she dropped.” Marlene never met a stranger and always had a smile, even through her illness, until she passed away. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Born Nov. 12, 1937, in Monroe City, she was the daughter of William and Thelma (Evans) Cates. Her parents, along with her husband, Billy Bruce Kimmel, whom she wed Oct. 20, 1962, preceded her. Also preceding her was her brother, Roger Cates; a brother-in-law, Michael R. Lynch; and a nephew, Steven M. Lynch.
Survivors include her sister, Carolyn Lynch of Carlyle, Ill.; a brother, Keith (Barbara) Cates of Washington; a nephew, Robert (Jill) Cates; nieces, Aubrey Cates, Alexandra Cates, Addison Cates and Dianne Van Coria; aunts, Ginny Evans and Bessie Biggs; uncle, Bob (Delores) Evans; many nieces and nephews on the Kimmel side of the family; many cousins; and many friends.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway, Vincennes. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
