Clifford E. Massie

Clifford E. Massie, 92, of Washington, went home to be with the Lord at 2:50 p.m. Thursday at his residence.

Born May 9, 1917, in Washington, he was the son of Fredrick R. and Kathryn (Sahm) Massie.

He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He started working for A.J. Raney at Raney Shoe Store in 1938, became manager in 1951, and in 1964 he became the owner until 2000. He was an avid fisherman.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Donald Brown of Washington and Peggy and Robert Ryan of Pennyville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael D. and Sheila Massie of Bloomington, Bernard C. Massie and Anthony and Helen Massie, all of Washington; a brother, Harold Massie of Washington; grandchildren, Michelle Martin, Marc Massie, Krissy Ryan, Sara Massie, Dane Ryan, Micah Ryan and Heather Faith; stepgrandchildren, Rick Terrel, Brittany Chestnut and Alisha Showalter; and several great-grandchildren.

His wife, Blanche (Milton) Massie, whom he married Dec. 9, 1938, died Sept. 9, 2003. A sister, Mildred Shellhouse, and four brothers, Bernard, William, Fred and Chester Massie, are also deceased.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, with Rev. Gordon Mann as celebrant. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ed Lee Mortuary, with a wake service at 4 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 6 p.m.
