LOOGOOTEE — Bert L. Smith, 85, died at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday.
Born July 23, 1924, in Martin County, he was the son of Cecil and Delphia (Fields) Smith.
A World War II Army veteran, he was a 1942 graduate of St. John High School. He owned and operated Bert Smith Trucking and American Beauty Mulch in Loogootee and was a member of St. John Catholic Church.
He was married on April 9, 1950 to Lela (Divine) Smith, who preceded him in death. His parents and a sister, Doris Bledsoe, are also deceased.
Survivors include six daughters, Donna Hill, Marlene Spears, Karen and husband Mike Hopkins, Tamara Mattingly and Trudy and husband Ron Riley, all of Loogootee, and Sheila and husband Danny Denson of Avon; two sons, Kent B. Smith and Bruce W. and wife Kim Smith, all of Loogootee; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Brocksmith Funeral Home, Loogootee. Burial will be in St. John Catholic Cemetery, with graveside military rites by the VFW and American Legion.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
