Edna Ann (Fitch) Martin

Edna Ann (Fitch) Martin went home to be with her Lord and Savior Friday.

She was born on Oct. 19, 1937, to William and Nancy (Van Winkle) Fitch of Alfordsville. She was educated in the Alfordsville schools, where she graduated in 1955. Edna married Samuel Warner Martin on April 14, 1957, at First Christian Church in Washington. Although first a mother, wife, and homemaker, Edna was also employed at and treasured her years and friends at Mason's Root Beer, Arnold's Red & White, and in the Washington Community Schools as a cook, and also in the Athletic Office. Always a willing volunteer, Edna spent many years as a Sunday School teacher, Brownie leader, and Cub Scout Den Mother. She enjoyed flower arranging and crafts and was a gifted seamstress, making many gifts for her children and grandchildren.

Edna loved her Lord and her church, and was proud of her Alfordsville roots, but most of all she loved her children and cherished her grandchildren who were of course spoiled by her as often as possible. Their parents were scolded as needed when she didn't agree with their treatment of her "grandbabies".

Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel W. Martin; her parents, William and Nancy Fitch; and her siblings, Wilbur, Orville, Claude, and Paul Fitch, Mildred Russell and Wanda Russell.

Edna is survived by her children and their spouses, Vickie Gail (Martin) Carter of Evansville; Samuel David (Andrea) Martin of Washington; Julie Ann (Jeffrey) Hart of Evansville; and Phillip Andrew (Angela) Martin of Greenwood; and her grandchildren, Blake Carter of Indianapolis, Jenny Carter of Evansville, Isaac Martin of Kailua, Hawaii, Aaron Martin of Washington, Levi Martin of Vevay, Samuel, Caleb, and Sarah Hart of Evansville, and Alexandra Martin of Greenwood.

Edna made friends wherever she went, and will be loved and missed by all who knew her.

Friends and family may call from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Gill Chapel and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Wednesday at First Christian Church.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, with Bro. Steve Dayton officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.

A "Celebration of Life" dinner will be held for all of Edna's friends and family following the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to First Christian Church of Washington.
