Gerald R. “Jerry” Gates

PETERSBURG — Gerald R. “Jerry” Gates, 70, died at 8 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper.

He was born Nov. 5, 1939, in Poseyville, and his father, Arthur Gates, is deceased. His mother, Geneva Patton of Stewartsville, survives.

A U.S. Army veteran, he farmed in Pike County until he retired in 2005. He also worked at Bucyrus Erie for 20 years.

He is also survived by a son, Larry Gates of Lawrenceville, Ill.; a daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Todd Like of Petersburg; brothers, Robert Gates and Doug Patton, both of Poseyville; grandchildren, Lauren Gates, Garrett Like, Heath Like and Ethan Like; nephews, Jeff Gates, Wayne Gates, Steven Patton and Stewart Patton; and one niece, Julie (Gates) Templeton.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Harris Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial will be in Walnut Hills Cemetery in Petersburg.

Visitation is after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to cancer research.
