WASHINGTON — Donald E. Hinkle, 86, of Washington, passed into eternity Wednesday. He was the son of Roy O. and Mary Evelyn (Sharum) Hinkle and was preceded in death by both parents and a brother, Kenny Hinkle, formerly of Washington. Don drove a bus for the Washington School system for 37 years and operated a popular car wash on 21st Street. He was a decorated World War II veteran, receiving a Purple Heart for injuries suffered in Normandy, France, in July 1944 and was the sole survivor of his unit. Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Jean (Hart) Hinkle; sister-in-law, Fay Ledbetter of Washington; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Audrey Hart of Bloomington, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews, as well as good friends who will miss him dearly. Don was a life member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, a past exalted ruler of the local BPO Elks Lodge, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 30 and the Hadi Shriners. He was also a member of First Christian Church and attended Central Christian Church. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Christian Church Cemetery, with Pastor James Payton officiating. American Legion and V.F.W. will accord full military honors. No flowers are requested, however memorial contributions may be made to the Central Christian Church. Arrangements are being made through Gill Funeral Home.
