LOOGOOTEE — Donald E. Johnston, 80, died at 2:25 p.m. Thursday at Daviess Community Hospital.
He was born Oct. 8, 1929, in Odon to Edward and Mabel (Boyd) Johnston. He married Eleanor Myers on Aug. 5, 1950, and she survives.
He was a member of Loogootee United Methodist Church and was a 1948 graduate of Odon High School. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 16 and the Charity No. 30 Masonic Lodge in Washington.
He was a Boy Scout leader of Troop 72 in Washington in the 1960s. He was a youth leader in the 1960s and a lay leader and speaker during the 60s and 70s at Wesley United Methodist Church.
He worked for Moore and Armes Electrical of Washington for 10 years during the 1960s. He was an electrician, master electrician and superintendent electrician for many large construction projects during the 1970s.
He worked various hospital and school projects, and power plant construction projects, including Daviess County Hospital, Washington High and Lena Dunn for Washington Schools and the Gibson Generating Station, Indianapolis Power and Light, Public Service Indiana, both at Petersburg and the Rockport Nuclear Generating Station.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Johnston; one son, Mark Johnston Sr. and his wife, Carmin, of Andrews, Ind.; one foster son, Elvis Babcock, Loogootee; three daughters — Connie Sue McCracken and Mrs. Lonnie (Donna) Cox, both of Washington and Marla Kammeyer and her partner, Elvis Babcock of Loogootee.
Two brothers, Ernest Atchley Jr. and Ronald Atchley, both of Odon, and one sister, Linda Hall of Newburgh, also survive.
Grandchildren surviving include: Mark Johnston Jr., Jason Johnston, Angela (Luke) Eck, Lawrence Johnston, Shelby Johnston, Jared Johnston, Elizabeth (Harry) Cook, Sarah A. McCracken, Charles McCracken, Brian McCracken, Damian McCracken, Derrick (Sarah E.) McCracken, Clayton Coleman, Amber Orchard, Lacey Smith, Aaron Cox, Shannon (Adam) Strange and Dustin (Erin) Cox.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Ernest Atchley Sr., two brothers, Kenneth and Morris Atchley, two sisters, Mary Mumma and Ernestine Snider, one granddaughter, Ashley Sutton and two grandsons, Love Smith and Matthew Cox.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Loogootee United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Concord Cemetery in Daviess County. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and from 11 a.m. until the hour of service at the church on Tuesday. There will be a Masonic service at 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
