WASHINGTON —
LOOGOOTEE – John D. Stoll, 82, died Thursday at his home.
Born April 19, 1930, in Mylo, N.D., he was the son of John and Minnie (Ashton) Stoll. A United States Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, he served from 1947 until 1967. He was a member of the Odon VFW, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bramble, a 4th Degree member of the Loogootee Knights of Columbus, and a former member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
John was a current member of the Martin County Council, which he had served for the last 10 years. He worked for the United States Civil Service from 1967 until 1977, serving in Europe and Germany. He had previously worked selling stocks and bonds, and he had sold insurance for the K of C. Several years ago he was supervisor and lead technician for the cable television company and was instrumental in bringing cable television to the Martin County area.
He was an avid golfer and enjoyed reading and working on his farm. He also loved being with his family, as his children and grandchildren brought a sparkle to his eyes.
John is survived by his wife, Barbara A. (Hornstein) Stoll, whom he married Sept. 15, 1953; one son, John D. Stoll II, and his wife, Bobbie, of Loogootee; one daughter, Peggy, and her husband, Jerry Padgett, of Loogootee; three brothers, Howard Stoll of Montgomery, Delbert Stoll of Loogootee and Donald Stoll of Jerome, Mich.; two sisters, Zetta Lengacher of Loogootee and Ruby Miller of Montgomery; five grandchildren, Joel Padgett, Melanie Padgett, Michell and husband Eric Ringwald, Amanda Stoll and Sarah Stoll; two stepgrandchildren, Dustin and wife Ambyr Brosmer, and Heather and husband Kyle Dauby; two great-grandchildren, Marie and Clare Ringwald; and one stepgreat-grandchild, Kyson Dauby.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Charles, Frank, Robert and James Stoll; and one sister, Dorothy Berkey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bramble. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by the VFW.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Brocksmith-Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee. There will be a K of C memorial service at 6 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a rosary service at 8 p.m. Online condolences may be made at www.brocksmithblakefuneralhomes.com.
