Winter’s coming. Unless you are a snowbird lucky enough to go somewhere warm for the next few months, winter is inevitable. Me? I like the early morning crisp air we’ve been having — because it can only mean one thing: Thanksgiving is coming!
Autumn is my favorite season; Thanksgiving my favorite holiday. It’s a time for family get-togethers, lots of card games and good food, of course. But better yet it’s a time to reflect on how blessed we are — despite the tough economic times in which we are living.
I wonder what Thanksgiving was like in the mid-1930s during the Great Depression. Somehow I believe our grievances today would pale in comparison.
Just how blessed am I?
•Well, despite risky pregnancies, I have two beautiful healthy daughters, full of laughter, funny notions and sayings. They are keeping me young (at least in spirit if not body).
•And, I have a wonderful husband. His bad habits are scarce — no drinking, no smoking and no hunting (unless you count catching fireflies with his little girls). He’s full of energy and a lot of fun to live with — great with helping me raise the girls and doing odd jobs around the house — except when the Irish are playing football.
When Notre Dame’s playing, he tunes the rest of us out. But that’s a habit I can live with.
•And, I had a mother who taught me how to work, to be content and numerous other life lessons I will always cherish. My wish is that I can pass them on to my own daughters.
•And, ....well the list could go on and on. If you look around, I’m sure you’ll find a lot of ways to count your blessings too.
Have an abundant Thanksgiving!
n Besides working for the daily newspaper, Melody Brunson also helps head up a new magazine in Knox County.
She loves teaching her girls new truths. Recently, while waiting in a traffic jam, she related a lesson from the New Testament when Jesus said: “The last shall be first and the first shall be last.” Her oldest touted, “But He didn’t say that today, Mom!”
