ELNORA — Abby McKee’s 25 points and 11 rebounds were impressive enough for the North Daviess Cougars on Monday. However, it may have been McKee’s third quarter that truly turned some heads, during ND’s 69-49 win.

McKee posted 16 of the team’s 18 points during the quarter, scoring almost two points per minute, as she single handily held off Shakamak’s final stab at the Lady Cougars.

“When you get 25 points and 11 rebounds, well there you go, that is all you can ask of a girl,” said North Daviess coach Roger Carrithers, whose Cougars moved to 9-4 with the win. “She had a couple of down games and hadn’t been feeling well, but she is getting well.”

The Cougars controlled the tempo from the start, taking a 19-6 lead to open the game, however it would be the fourth quarter before ND would deliver the knockout blow. The Cougars were hindered by turnovers and fouls throughout the game, but got someone to step up every quarter, to keep the Lady Lakers at bay.

Marisa Baker and Stephanie Williams were both in double figures for the game and helped ND out to their double-figure lead in the first half. Baker was 3-4 from behind the arc in the first quarter and scored 11 of her total 13 points. Williams was the difference maker in the second quarter, scoring eight of the team’s 16, to go into the half with a 35-20 lead. The pair also did a nice job in the back court, as Baker had three steals and Williams had five assists.

“Stephanie is capable of getting into double figures a lot and Brooke (Wittmer) also did a nice job back there,” as well said Carrithers.

In spite of the offensive fireworks the Cougars provided, Shakamak hung right with ND in the middle two quarters, as both teams scored 24 points each.

“We lost our focus for a little while,” said Carrithers. “There were a lot of fouls called in the game, but it wasn’t the referees. We just got a little too aggressive with our hands instead of our feet. I can’t fault them too much, because they were blocking out. It was hard to get a rythym in a game like that.

The Cougars also got production from the center position. Glenna Jolliff and Katie Doades combined for close to a double-double. Doades, a freshman, had four points and nine rebounds, while Jolliff had three points and four boards.

“If you can get that out of your center position and Abby gets a double-double then you are going to be happy,”added Carrithers.

The Cougars were finally able to put the game out of reach, in the final four minutes, doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the Lady Lakers hands. Also scoring for the Cougars was senior Mallory Baker and Cherra Williams with four each and Maggy Sommers with one.

Much of the Shakamak offense came from the free throw line, as they were 19-29.

Jesse Gilbert also was a force of her own, as she got free in the post for 17 points.

The Cougars also took the JV game 33-23 and next play South Knox on Thursday.
