Local wrap-up for Tuesday

OAKLAND CITY — Class A No. 4 Loogootee followed its Evansville Harrison tourney championship on Saturday by downing Wood Memorial 25-14, 25-22, 25-11 on Monday in Blue Chip Conference volleyball action.

The Lady Lions (21-4, 7-1) won their 17th match in a row. Taylor Wittmer topped LHS with 16 kills, 14 service points, and five aces. Wittmer also had four blocks.

Katie Mattingly added seven kills, nine points, and three aces for the Lady Lions. Kara Mann contributed four killls, while Blair Dearwester registered 23 assists and 12 digs. Kristan Hall added 10 assists and 10 digs.

Loogootee dropped to 16-6 at the reserve level with a 13-25, 25-24, 15-10 loss.

Rox downs WC

SHOALS — Shoals beat Washington Catholic in Blue Chip boys’ soccer action on Monday at Shoals.

The Rox were led by two sophomores, Kendrick Fuhrman and Tommy Hilderbrand, who both posted goals.

Fuhrman opened with a goal three minutes into the game and Hilderbrand added a goal 10 minutes before halftime. Seth Taylor and Fuhrman both recorded assists in the game.

“You might say our sophomore speedsters got it done for us,” said Shoals coach Jeff Gee. “It is hard for some teams to deal with our speed up front when they get out in front of people.”

The Rox then went on to play 40 solid minutes of defense, led by keeper Joel Potts, who recorded his sixth shutout of the season. With the win, Shoals moved to 9-3-3 and 3-2-2 in the Blue Chip Conference.

WJHS gets to finals at Wood

OAKLAND CITY The Washington Junior High volleyball team played in the Wood Memorial Tourney over the weekend.

The eighth graders won the tourney, after defeating Wood 25-21 and 25-16 in the first game and Pike Central in the championship, 19-25, 25-20 and 15-4. This is the second year in a row they have won this tourney. For the day Tenale Stone had five kills, Catherine Obaseki had two kills and five aces and Kelci Newton had one kill. Jenna Stoll added three kills and 10 aces, Payton Shake had eight kills and six aces, Mary Brothers added four kills and six aces, while Morgan Patterson had five aces and Abby O’Haver added one.

The seventh grade opened with a win over Wood, 20-25, 25-21 and 15-9, before losing to Pike Central, 12-25 and 15-25. The seventh graders were led by Taylor Donaldson with five kills and an ace, Kathy Brochin with one kill and two aces, Taylor Stuckey with two kills, Blythe Wildridge, three aces and one kill, and Desiree Kendall with two aces. Also scoring was Sidney Gaither with three kills and three aces, Abby McCormick with three kills and Annsley Newton with two aces.

Vikes beat Paoli

PAOLI — The Barr-Reeve Viking volleyball team (23-5) rolled to its 23rd win, with a 25-6, 25-8 and 25-13 win over Paoli on Monday.

In the win, Amber Rademacher and Terrell Miller had 14 and 13 assists, respectively. Brittney Taylor and Lindsey Wagler had 17 kills, while Melissa Yoder, Lindsey Wagler and Shanelle Burch combined for 32 of the team’s 56 digs. Yoder also led with 17 points, followed by 10 from Miller and nine from Rademacher.

The JV (17-4) won 25-8 and 25-14. Kacie James led with six assists, Devan Bullock had four kills and Kylie Sluder had three, while Ashley Wagler and Audrey Blair had six digs each. James, Sluder and Melinda Yoder also led with seven points each.

NDJH competes in SWIAC

SWITZ CITY — In the 2006 Junior High Cross Country Girls Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference meet run Monday night at White River Valley, the Lady Cougars ran well. This year the girls did not have enough runners to support a team however, the girls ran a tight knit race by placing 17th, 20th, 21st and 23rd. Finishing first for the Lady Cougars was Nicole Fuesler with a time of 14.27. Fuesler was followed by Tiffany Bell, Jessie Webster and Darrah Holder. The girls all finished under 15 minutes and with only 29 seconds separating the first and last place finisher for North Daviess.

Smith is 5th in frosh SWIAC

SWITZ CITY — North Daviess’ Matthew Smith had an impressive fifth place finish at the 2006 Freshman Cross Country SWIAC race Monday night with a time of 16.24. Smith is the lone freshman runner this year for the Cougars.

Hatchets fall to Lincoln

The Washington Hatchet volleyball team dropped a four-game match to Big 8 foe Vincennes Lincoln on Monday, 19-25, 21-25, 25-23 and 22-25.

With the loss, the Hatchets fell to 8-18. Brittany Babrick topped the kills category with 15, followed by nine from Liz Horton, seven from Jessica Prewett and six from Madalyn Blackburn. Blackburn also led with 26 digs, followed by 22 from Babrick, Kiersten Hinkle’s 14 digs, 10 from Amber Criswell and nine from Hannah Lengacher.

Casey Himsel posted 15 assists and Hinkle added 12 and two aces. Babrick, Horton and Prewett combined for eight blocks, while Melissa Neukam had three aces.

The JV moved to 14-9, with a 25-18 and 25-20 win.

They were led by Taylor May with five kills, nine assists and four aces. Kailey Hamilton had seven digs and five assists, while Sara Eblin added seven kills and nine digs. Kendall Wininger also had three kills.
