Local wrap-up for Wednesday

EVANSVILLE — The Washington Junior High girls soccer teams dropped a pair of games at Evansville North on Monday.

The eighth grade Lady Hatchets fell 5-4 with WJHS getting goals from Sierra Bryant, Kayla Smith, Emmy Lunsford and Courtney Shake.

The seventh grade girls fell to North 2-0.

Cougars blank Valley in JV football

ELNORA — A stingy North Daviess defense held the Blackhawks scoreless in junior varsity football Monday night.

North Daviess won 12-0 as quarterback Ethan Dyal had a four-yard run for a TD and Jess Tribby scooped a fumble and ran 30 yards for another Cougar score.

Jayce Wininger recorded two quarterback sacks and three tackles for loss, and Logan Brinegar and Clayton Byrer also stopped ball carriers in the backfield. The 1 – 0 Cougars travel to Sullivan on Monday.

WJHS 8th plays 2

EVANSVILLE — Washington’s eighth grade soccer team picked up a win and a tie recently.

The Hatchets beat Evansville North 5-1 on Saturday, getting two goals from Jonathan Abrego and one goal each from Brad Mason, Jacob Stephens and Travis Williams. Assists came from Christian Burns and Williams.

On Monday, the Hatchets tied Gibson Southern, 2-2, with goals coming from Stephens and Adam Tabor.

WJHS runs at South Knox

The Washington Junior High Cross Country team took third at South Knox on Monday behind South Knox and Loogootee.

On the 1.8 mile course, KC Heller was second, Drew Brothers was 12th, Blake Harner was 23rd, Sam Baker was 27th and Colton Garland was 29th. Also running was Garrett Harner and Brock Overton.

In the girls’ race was Cloe Heller in first, Shantel Tedrow was third, Kiendra John was sixth and Abby McCormick was seventh.

WJHS 7th wins 2

Washington Junior High seventh grade soccer opened the season with a 10-1 win over Castle Gold on Saturday. Blaine Arney gave the Hatchets the first goal of the season, while Cullen Arnold scored his first of three goal on the night 15 minutes and headed in his second goal of the half off a free kick by Arney.

Salvador Rodriguez closed out the half with a goal. Derek Gress began the second half with a goal chipped over the keeper’s head to make it 5-0.

Tyler Seibert scored with an assist from Conner Brashear. Arnold completed his hat trick with another header taken off a corner from Arney. Arney scored his second goal of the night bending a corner into the back of the net. Rounding out the scoring for the Hatchets were Jace Sama and Edgar Marroquin each with one goal.

On Monday night the Hatchets hosted Gibson Southern Gold and continued strong with a 7-0 win. Udilfido Serrano began the attack with one of four goals on the night with an assist by Arnold. Jace Sama scored to put the Hatchets up 2-0 and Austin Bush began the attack again by dribbling down the endline before crossing it to Arnold for a 3-0 lead.

Serrano score his second goal of the night assisted by Marroquin just before he finished from a corner by Blaine Arney. Serrano scored his final goal late into the second half while Derek Gress completed the 7-0 run. The Hatchets travel to Goebel Complex to take on Evansville North on Thursday.

Lion tennis team falls to Southridge

The Loogootee Lion tennis team (3-1) dropped a 3-2 match to Southridge on Tuesday.

Lion wins came from Cory Rayhill, who beat Ben Flick, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1, while Trey Smith and Wyllie Wagoner beat John Veach and Lance Woody won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

At No. 2 and 3 singles, Mike Olinger beat Jeff Mersinger, 1 and 2, while Nick Olinger defeated Jordan Arvin 1 and 1. Eric Greene and Jordan Guinn lost 6-1, 0-6, 7-6(5) at No. 2 doubles.

“This really was a tough match to lose. Southridge has been a thorn in our side for a number of years,” said LHS coach Rick Graves.

“We have had some great matches with them and tonight was no exception, we just came up a little short. Cory played a great match and had Ben Flick totally baffled. I was really proud of the way he handled the match and stayed focused mentally. Ben can unnerve you but Cory never allowed him to get to him.

“Trey and Wyllie played very well and are becoming a solid two doubles team. I have always felt that is a key position on any team and they are giving us the kind of play we need.”

The Lions won the JV, 2-1, with Mark Bauer and the team of Casey and Cody Woods getting the wins.

WC volleyball team falls in 3

The Washington Catholic volleyball team fell in three games at the Birdcage for the second straight night, Tuesday.

WC lost 25-17, 25-15 and 25-20.

The JV also lost 25-3 and 25 7.

Hatchets down ND JV

Washington Hatchet junior varsity volleyball team claimed the JV match in two games 25-19, 25-15, on Tuesday.

Olivia Brashear led WHS with seven kills and also served two aces, while Payton Shake added nine assists. Codie Myers had seven digs. Samara Graber had four kills and four aces for ND.

WCMS boys down Rivet

VINCENNES — The Washington Catholic Middle School boys’ soccer team defeated Vincennes Rivet Monday 3-1.

Michael Dashner, Billy Strange, and Dylan Riley each scored for WC. The win moves WC to 2-1 on the season.

Hatchets down Alices, 6-0

VINCENNES — The Washington Hatchet soccer team blasted Vincennes Lincoln in Big 8 soccer action on Tuesday in Vincennes.

The Hatchets scored two goals in the first half, as Keith O’Haver scored on a Nick Cosby pass, while Randy Marroquin made it 2-0 at 31:46.

Gage Overton got the first of his two goals on an assist from O’Haver at the 42-minute mark. Kyle Price picked up the fifth goal of the game on a penalty kick, while Overton and Graham Singleton hooked up at 56:00.

Singleton also picked up the final goal of the night on an unassisted tally.

The Hatchets dominated the offense, with a 24-4 shot advantage and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Chase Taylor handled his only save opportunity

The win moves the Hatchets to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Big Eight.

The Hatchets next game is slated for Tuesday against Mt. Vernon, with a 5:30 p.m. JV start.

Harner 9th at SK

Washington’s Cody Harner’s name was ommitted from the scoring at the cross country meet at South Knox on Monday. He was ninth with a time of 21:55.

    The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to clip Southwestern Indiana Conference foe White River Valley, 4-3.
