BICKNELL — The Washington Catholic Cardinal volleyball team lost in five games to North Knox,22-15, 20-25, 23-25, 27-25 and 16-14.

Leading the Cardinals with 17 points and nine assists was Jodie Carie. Heather O’Brian added nine points and nine assists. Paige Campton added seven kills, five points and one block, while Jordan Crew had four blocks and two kills.

The JV game was won by WC 25-16, 25-20 and 15-14.

Cougar JV loses

SULLIVAN — The North Daviess junior varsity football team had a rough game Monday night at Sullivan. The Cougars played a hard-fought game but could not compete with the size and experience of the Sullivan squad. The Cougar team, made up of mostly freshmen, with a couple sophomores and one junior, were beaten by a mostly junior squad, 44 –12.

Isaiah Swartzentruber ran a kickoff 70 yards for a Cougar touchdown in the first quarter. Gene Vosters also ran a kickoff back 70 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Ethan Dyal had a 30-yard run that was opened up by a block from Jess Tribby. Brandon Hughes added a quarterback sack. Rob Hammer had a 60-yard run that was called back due to a block in the back. In the fourth quarter, JB Davis and Jess Tribby teamed up to strip the ball from a Sullivan ball carrier. Late in the fourth, Ethan Dyal connected with Thomas Farris for a 60-yard pass. The Cougars host Mitchell on Tuesday.

NDJH football drops opener

ELNORA — The North Daviess eighth grade football team dropped its season opener to Oolitic, 26-8 Thursday evening.

In the second half, the Cougars opened with a 65-yard scoring drive, capped off with when quarterback Brandt Lawyer hit Drew Harkness on a 10-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 14-6. The Cougars then put together another nice drive, but fumbled the ball at the Oolitic one-yard line. On the following play, the Cougars tackled Oolitic in their endzone to close out the scoring at 26-8. Leading the Cougars on offense were Harkness with 92 yards on 15 carries, and Anthony Steffey with 34 yards on eight carries. Lawyer completed 4-8 passing for 80 yards, one TD, and one interception. Leading tacklers were Harkness and Steffey with six each, and Seth Hammer with three solos.

In seventh grade action, ND dropped the game, 6-0. Leading rushers for the Cougars were Drew Lengacher with 30 yards on seven carries, and Lane Miller with 20 yards on five attempts. Leading tacklers on the defensive side were Evan Judy, Cameron Chestnut, Austin Hollis and Lengacher.

The Cougars take on Union Dugger on Sept. 4.

Hatchets 2nd at North Knox

BICKNELL — The Washington Hatchet cross country took a pair of seconds at North Knox on Tuesday.

In the boys’ race, Dylan Burris posted an 18:12 for second, while Shane Butler was seventh (19:36) and Adam Lane was eighth at 19:37. Rounding out the scoring was Cody Slavens in 10th (19:39) and Cody Harner at 11th with a 19:46.

Also running was Dylan Hedrick (14th) and Ryne Brothers (16th). Pike Central won with 27 points, WHS had 30 and North Knox had 58.

In the girls’ race, Britney Archer was third with a 22:34, Cassie Schwandner took seventh (23:47), Alison Gaither was eighth (24:01), Kendra Norris was 13th (25:35) and Talley Barwick took 14th (25:58). Also running were Crystal Aldarado (15th) and Chelsea Lashbrook (17th).

Pike Central won with 18 points, while WHS had 41.

“I think our kids ran as good as could be expected in that heat,” said WHS coach Dave Harman.

“Our kids had to wait out in the heat for an hour before they ran. The heat was a struggle.”

Shoals beats Wood Memorial

SHOALS — The Shoals Jug Rox soccer team defeated Wood Memorial, 3-2 in Blue Chip soccer action on Tuesday. Tommy Hilderbrand had a goal and an assist, while Kendrick Fuhrman assisted a Caleb Otero goal. Derek Holt then scored the winning goal in the 70th minute.

“Wood scored first in each of the halves and were up 2-1 with 20 minutes to play, but my kids didn’t quit,” said Shoals coach Jeff Gee.

Lions beat Bedford

BEDFORD — The Loogootee Lion tennis team picked up a non-conference victory on Tuesday over Bedford, 5-0. Cory Rayhill blasted Chris Bunch 6-0 and 6-0, while Jeff Mersinger defeated BNL’s Nate Head 6-0, 6-1. Mark Bauer went to three sets, but beat Josh Clampett 5-7, 6-0, 1-0(3).

In doubles play, Eric Greene and Jordan Guinn defeated Kevin East and Ryan McDaniel 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Trey Smith and Wyllie Wagoner beat BNL’s Ryan Barton and Dustin Ford 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2.

“It was great to play again after a week off and to get a 5-0 win. When it’s been that long of a layoff you kind of expect everyone to be a little rusty, but I thought we played well,” said LHS coach Rick Graves.

“I was really happy to see Jeff play as strongly as he did. Playing up a spot this year has been a difficult transition so for him to play this well is a positive sign. Mark really turned things around and played a great second set as well as a strong tiebreak. Our doubles were active and aggressive. One doubles was a fun match to watch with a lot of good points from both teams. Trey and Wyllie continue to give us solid play at the two doubles spot.”

The Lions won all three JV matches as well.

B-R falls to Southridge

MONTGOMERY — The Barr-Reeve Viking tennis team lost 4-1 to Southridge on Tuesday.

Barr-Reeve’s No. 1 doubles team of Kevin Knepp and Anthony Yoder won 6-3, 6-7 and 7-6 over Cory Lindham and Brett Rasche.

Hogan Helms fell to Ben Flick at No. 1, 3 and 1. William Helms lost 0 and 1 to Mike Olinger, while Southridge’s Nick Olinger beat Kendall Murphy, 6-4 and 6-3. The Vikes also lost at No. 2 doubles, with Eric Blair and Luke Harmon falling to John Veatch and Ryan Boeham, 3-6, 7-5 and 6-3.

The JV went 2-1.

ND loses 4-1 to NED

ELNORA — The North Daviess tennis team dropped a 4-1 match to Northeast Dubois on Tuesday.

Blane Lawyer was the only ND winner, beating Kyle Haas, 3 and 3 at No. 2. Zach Overton fell to Evan Hulsman, 3 and 2 in the top spot, while, Thomas Nugent lost to Zach Neukam, 6-3 and 7-6 (6).

Austin Lengacher and Blake Burkhart fell, 7-5 and 7-5 to Logan Clark and Isaac Heeke at No. 1 doubles, while Tyler McDonald and Shane Porter lost 2-6, 6-1 and 6-4 to Ty Armstrong and Grahman Giesler.

“Blane did a great job of staying in all of the points and Thomas played good in his second set, but just lost interest in the third,” said ND coach Tony Steele.

“Blake and Austin gave 100 percent on every point. I’m really happy with the way they are playing. We need to have all of our top seven players playing well to be successful. Life without Logan is very tough.”

Hatchets beat Shoals in 3

The Washington Hatchet volleyball team posted a three-game win over Shoals on Tuesday in the Hatchet House, 25-23, 25-16 and 25-10.

The 4-3 Lady Hatchets were paced by Brittany Babrick with 15 digs, five kills and three blocks, while Sara Eblin also added 15 digs, nine kills and three blocks. Kiersten Hinkle had 17 assists, Hannah Lengacher added 13 digs, Liz Horton had 11 kills, while Taylor May had 14 assists and 10 digs.

“This was a great win to build our confidence level for Thursday against Jasper,” said WHS coach Lisha Browning. “We played aggressive tonight. We played well on the net and defense was much better.”

The JV moved to an impressive 6-1, with a 25-14 and 25-20 win. Kailey Hamiltonhad six assists, five kills and nine aces. Payton Shake had 10 assists, Taylor McPherson and Codie Myers had five digs each.

WCMS falls to Loogootee

The Washington Catholic middle school tennis team fell to Loogootee, 8-1 on Tuesday.

WC’s Seth Fowler and Billy Strange defeated Loogootee’s Wesley Witman and Cam Chilton 6-4 at No.1 doubles.

Cam Lancaster and Jon Buchanan were defeated by Bryce Wilz and Stephen Seals 4-6. Nick Fisher and Strange were also defeated by Garrett Carrico and Matthew Struck, 0-6.

In singles matches, Strange lost to Conner Wittmer, 1-6, Fowler fell to Waylan Matthews, 0-6, Buchanan lost to Jesse Horney, 0-6 and Lancaster lost to Daniel Shoultz, 3-6. Also losing was Fisher to Tyler Booker, 0-6 and Strange to Kyle Lark, 1-6.

Loogootee downs Southridge in 3

LOOGOOTEE — The Loogootee Lion volleyball team picked up a non-conference win in three games Tuesday, 25-12, 25-22 and 25-22.

The Lions (5-3) were led by Lauren Baugh with 12 kills, while Kelci Mann and Mindy Fields had eight each.

Kristan Hall and Fields also combined for 35 assists, while Mann and Chelsea Strange had 17 points each, along with 12 from Kristin Lagree. Kara Mann also led with four blocks, while Kelci Mann had two.

The JV Lions lost in two games, 25-21 and 25-19.
