Local wrap-up for Saturday


DUBOIS — Washington Catholic kept up with Northeast Dubois but a lackluster third quarter downed the Cardinals, 72-52 in a Blue Chip Conference match up Friday.

“We played intense for 32 minutes,” WC Coach Bill Brown said. “The third quarter hurt us.”

The Cardinals (0-2, 0-1 BCC) were down by six at halftime, but the Jeeps (2-1, 1-0 BCC) rolled out a 21-8 third quarter to down Washington Catholic.

“They came out and turned up the intensity and we turned the ball over the first three possessions,” Brown said. “It went from six (point deficit) to 14 points really quick.”

Washington Catholic was led by Austin Jarrett with 27 points. Brown praised his play inside with the larger Jeeps. The Cardinals also had contributions from Jon Costello, nine points and Harrison Holmes, eight points.

“Holmes played a heck of a game,” Brown said. “That’s the best game he’s played.”

Also in the scoring column for WC was Matt Stuart with six points and Austin Deem with two points. Northeast Dubois was led by Dexter Royer with 21 points, with Josh Gordon with 20 points and Trevor Atkins had 15 points.

The Cardinals’ next game is Friday against Vincennes Rivet at the Birdcage.

Cougars down Shoals

SHOALS — The North Daviess Cougars warmed up for today’s home opener against Washington with a commanding 58-32 win over Shoals on Friday.

The Cougars (2-0) took command from the start, taking a 23-7 lead after one stanza and cruised to the end. Thomas Nugent led North Daviess with 22 points and four rebounds and Jacob Miller kept pace with 16 points and four boards.

Logan Wagler added six points, six rebounds and four assists. Kendall Wittmer had four points and seven assists and Lucas Swartzentruber contributed five points, four boards and four assists.

For Shoals (0-2), Garrett Bateman led the Jug Rox with 13 points and Dillon Cornett with eight points and Derek Turpin with seven.

The Cougars take on the Hatchets today at the Cougar Den. Shoals will travel to Trinity Lutheran today.

Lions move to 3-0

OAKLAND CITY — The Loogootee Lion basketball team moved to 3-0 with a road win over Wood Memorial, 61-47 on Friday.

The Lions were led by Roland Slaubaugh with 18 points, while Tyler Trambaugh had 14. Jon Baugh was also in double figures with 11. Pat Bowling and Brett Mattingly each added nine points.

“We started out a little slow, but we talked to the kids about staying intense,” said LHS assistant Mike Wininger. “We played much better in the second half. We did a better job of getting out on the break.”

The Lion JV also picked up a win. LHS hosts Rivet tonight at 6 p.m.

ND frosh beats Shakamak

ELNORA — The North Daviess freshman basketball team defeated the Shakamak Lakers.35-33 at North Daviess. The Cougars improved to 2-0 for the season behind Connor Wikle who scored 10 points along with four assists, while Lewis Nugent added 15 points for ND.

Vikes beat ND 7th

MONTGOMERY — The Barr-Reeve seventh grade basketball team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 49-17 victory over county rival North Daviess.

The Vikings were led in scoring by Jon McMullen who poured in a game-high 22. He was followed closely by Micah Bullock with 15 and Logan Lengacher with 10. Martin Winkler rounded out the Barr-Reeve scoring with a bucket.

Trevor Steiner, Chayse Wagler, Ryan Knepp and Clay Cummings also played significant minutes and combined for several assists, steals and rebounds between them.

Alex Wittmer led the Cougars with six points. Dakota Adams chipped in with three points while Braden Lawyer, Austin Beuhler, Ryan Lengacher and Dusten Cook finished with two points each.

Barr-Reeve returns to action on Saturday with a home game against Pike Central beginning at 1 p.m.

B-R 8th downs ND

The North Daviess eighth grade boys’ basketball team dropped a contest at Barr-Reeve on Monday night, falling to the host Vikings 25-23. The Vikings raced out to a 14-5 lead after one quarter, but the Cougars gradually worked their way back to a 22-18 lead with three minutes left in the contest. Barr-Reeve hit some big shots to take a 25-23 lead in the final seconds of the game, but the Cougars had a chance to tie at the end before Nick Crays’ last-second shot rimmed out at the buzzer. Wes Lengacher and Adam Wagler paced the Cougars with eight points each and Crays added seven. Conner Sorrells led Barr-Reeve with seven points.

Cougars, Cardinals split

ELNORA — The fifth and sixth grade North Daviess Cougar basketball team played Washington Catholic at home and split Thursday.

The ND fifth grade won. getting scoring from, Sam Chapin with eight, Lane Hollingsworth had 13 and Zach Hurt had four.

The ND sixth grade lost to Washington Catholic, 33-15, with Logan Wagler getting six, Ben Detweiler adding five and Waylon Lengacher and Jacob Smiley getting two each.

WJHS 7th falls to South Knox

The Washington seventh grade girls lost to South Knox, 32-31 on Thursday. Ally Hunsinger led WJHS with 14 points, while Audra Stallman had seven points and nine rebounds.

Lupe Perez had six points and Olivia Sherman had two points, while Lakota Bryant and Katie Hedrick had a free throw each.
