Chicago — Chicago Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee has rejected a trade to the Los Angeles Angels, saying he prefers to finish the season with his team.

Lee says he "really kind of agonized over" the decision, but that he decided the best thing for himself and his family was to stay in Chicago.

The 34-year-old, who has a no-trade clause, also says he plans to play beyond this season and would like to do it with the Cubs.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella says he was "very pleased" to hear that Lee was staying with the team.

Lee is having a tough season, batting just .248 with 11 home runs and 44 RBIs. But his Gold Glove defense would have been a welcome addition to an Angels roster that already has used six players at first base since Kendry Morales broke his leg jumping on home plate after his walkoff grand slam on May 29. The list includes catcher Mike Napoli and second baseman Howie Kendrick.

Angels general manager Tony Reagins was not willing to talk about the specifics of any proposed deals.

"I'm not going to comment specifically about any player that's under contract with another club, but we have and we will continue to consider any move that would strengthen us," Reagins said. "We've inquired over the past months and reached out to several clubs regarding the availability of players on the offensive side that could help us."
