Bethesda — BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Showing no linger effects from a collapse at the Masters, 22-year-old Rory McIlroy made the toughest test in golf look like child's play at Congressional with a 6-under 65 on Thursday to build the biggest 18-hole lead at the U.S. Open in 35 years.
He missed only one green. He was the only player in the 156-man field without a single bogey. And just like that, McIlroy wound up atop the leaderboard after the opening round for the third time in the last four majors.
McIlroy was three shots clear of former PGA champion Y.E. Yang and Charl Schwartzel, the South African who captured the Masters two months ago at McIlroy's expense.
British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen was at 69, joining a small group that included Sergio Garcia and Ryan Palmer, the lone American among the nine players who broke 70.
Defending champion Graeme McDowell had a 70.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Almost 150 people required hospital treatment and close to 100 were arrested after rioters swept through downtown Vancouver following the Canucks' loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final.
Vancouver Coastal Health spokeswoman Anna Marie D'Angelo said Thursday that three stabbing victims had been admitted and a man was in critical condition with head injuries after a fall from a viaduct. Rioting and looting left cars burned, stores in shambles and windows shattered over a roughly 10-block radius of the city's main shopping district.
Police Chief Jim Chu said nine officers were injured, including one who required 14 stitches after being hit with a brick and some who had bite marks. He said 15 cars were burned, including two police cars. A local business leader estimated more than 50 businesses were damaged.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Boston Bruins' Stanley Cup-clinching victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night earned the highest television rating for an NHL game in 37 years.
Boston's 4-0 win in Game 7 on NBC earned a 4.8 rating and 8 share. That's the best since a 7.6/27 for Boston-Philadelphia in 1974.
It's up 2 percent from last year's deciding Game 6 between Chicago and Philadelphia and up 12 percent from the most recent Game 7 in 2009 between Detroit and Pittsburgh.
The seven games averaged 4.6 million viewers on NBC and Versus, the most for a series split between network and cable involving a Canadian team.
The game earned a 43.4/64 in Boston, the best for a hockey game since records began being kept for the market in 1991. That's higher than any game in the Celtics' last two NBA finals.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Olie Kolzig left the Washington Capitals on less-than-ideal terms after nearly two decades as a popular and productive goalie. Clearly, that rift is a thing of the past.
The man known as "Olie the Goalie" returned to the Capitals on Thursday as their associate goaltender coach. The team also announced that Dave Prior will come back in his past old role of director of goaltending and NHL goaltender coach.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A man attacked the wife of Pirates catcher Chris Snyder in a traffic dispute while Snyder sat in the car, unable to get out because he'd had back surgery, Pittsburgh police said.
Carla Snyder and the scooter-riding man, Subhash Arjanbhi Modhwadia, nearly collided Wednesday. The 44-year-old Modhwadia followed her to a gas station, kicked the vehicle and swung at Carla Snyder, police said. He also ripped a mirror off the car.
A passer-by and an off-duty police officer subdued him. Modhwadia bit the bystander and threw punches with keys between his fingers, police said. Snyders' two children also were in the car.
SAN FERNANDO, Calif. (AP) — Former New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Lenny Dykstra has pleaded not guilty to grand theft auto and drug possession charges.
The 48-year-old Dykstra entered his plea Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court and remains in jail on $500,000 bail. He is scheduled to return to court July 11.
Dykstra was charged with 25 counts and faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted.
Prosecutors say Dykstra, his accountant and a friend leased three high-end cars from a Southern California dealership this year by providing phony information and claiming credit through a phony business.
Officers who arrested Dykstra at his Los Angeles home in April say they found cocaine, Ecstasy and synthetic human growth hormone.
On Monday, Dykstra pleaded not guilty to bankruptcy fraud in federal court.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — It turns out Kentucky coach John Calipari hasn't reached 500 career victories after all.
The school says it will change Calipari's career record because of 42 vacated victories from his time at Memphis and Massachusetts. In a statement, Kentucky said it had consulted with the NCAA and determined it was "in error" to have celebrated Calipari's 500th career win against Florida on Feb. 26.
The school says it will report Calipari's career record "consistent with the NCAA's official records and statistics." Kentucky had debated the issue with the NCAA because Calipari was never found to be at fault for the violations that led to the vacated wins.

NEW YORK (AP) — Animal Kingdom has a small fracture to the cannon bone in his left hind leg that will keep the Kentucky Derby winner out for several weeks.
The colt's ownership, Team Valor International, said in a statement Thursday that Animal Kingdom had scans of the leg at the New Bolton Research Center in Kennett Square, Pa., after a disappointing finish in the Belmont Stakes.
Dr. Dean Richardson found a small "fissure" where the cannon bone joins the hock.
Veterinarians believe the 3-year-old colt will be sound in about two weeks, though there is the danger that the crack will become a larger fracture.

MALBUN, Liechtenstein (AP) — Juan Mauricio Soler was hospitalized with severe brain injuries after a crash during the Tour of Switzerland on Thursday.
Steven Kruijswijk of the Netherlands won the sixth stage, while Damiano Cunego of Italy kept the overall lead by finishing third.
The 28-year-old rider has bleeding on the brain, as well as "multiple fractures and hematomas," according to a statement by his Movistar team on its website. Soler was in second place overall and less than a minute behind the leader.
Race medic Roland Kretsch said the crash happened 7 miles into the sixth stage. Soler was unconscious and bleeding from the left ear when doctors reached him, and he was airlifted to a hospital. He was in a stable condition in intensive care, Kretsch said.
Tour organizers temporarily stopped the stage to treat several injured riders. They were unclear about how the crash happened and whether spectators were involved.
AMSTERDAM (AP) — The International Cycling Union says Alberto Contador has the right to defend his Tour de France title while it is appealing the Spanish cycling federation's decision to clear him of doping at last year's Tour.
The UCI said in a statement Thursday that the three-time Tour winner "has the statutory right to take part in any competition insofar as he has not been found guilty" by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The UCI and World Anti-Doping Agency have appealed the Spanish federation's decision to the CAS, which will hear it from Aug. 1-3, a week after the Tour. It was originally set for early June, but the CAS delayed it to give both sides more time to prepare.
