USI wins Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team completed a sweep of the Fern Valley Hotel Classic with a 101-35 victory over Ohio Valley University. USI reaches the 8-0 mark in 2009-10, while Ohio Valley falls to 1-7.

The match-up was close for the first five minutes of the game when the Screaming Eagles came alive and led 49-19 at the intermission.

In the second half, the Eagles continued on their torrid pace and put the game away with a 17-2 run. USI would go on to lead by as many as 67 points, 96-29, with 4:09 left in the second half. The final 66 point margin of victory was nine points short of the school record.

Former Barr-Reeve Viking Nick Duncheon had seven points, while Washington’s Isaac Stoll had two points. Stoll also added six rebounds, while Duncheon had two blocks and two steals.

Hanover defeats Defiance

HANOVER — Hanover College defeated Defiance (Ohio) College, 79-73 on Saturday at the Collier Arena in Hanover.

Washington’s Cody Osmon played, but did not score in the game. He was 0-1 from the field.

Nugent leads VU

ST. LOUIS — Vincennes guard and 2009 North Daviess graduate Thomas Nugent came off the bench to score 40 points in the Trailblazers two games over the weekend.

He was VU’s leading scorer in both games.

With increased playing time and offensive opportunities on a somewhat-depleted VU roster, Nugent had a career-high 22 on 13-of-16 shooting —including a 6-of-7 performance from behind the arc — in an 81-80 victory over host John A. Logan College on Saturday. The walk-on freshman was 5-for-5 in the first half en route to 14 before halftime.

One of Nugent’s treys against the Statesmen gave VU a 41-36 lead after the Trailblazers had battled back into the game in the second half, thanks in part to an earlier Nugent 3-pointer. The long-range shots helped VU stay locked in a close game until sophomore guard Fred Ford was fouled with three seconds left and he hit both free throws for the one-point win.

The Trailblazers then headed out to the Meramec Shootout in St. Louis on Sunday and Nugent rang up 18 against Moberly Area Community College. He was 4-for-6 from 3-point range and 4-for-4 at the stripe in VU’s 89-75 loss. Nugent also pulled down six rebounds in the second game.

“Thomas has shown all season that he can shoot the ball very well and he was outstanding in the last few games,” said VU Coach David Ragland. “When he got the chance to play more, he definitely stepped up. Some of his points were at key times and he really saw the results of all his hard work. He only had a few turnovers while having the ball in his hands quite a bit.

“I like his rate of development,” Ragland added. “He’s maturing more and more all the time and provides us with a much-needed boost when he’s in the game. He’ll play good defense and guard somebody, he’ll get on the floor after the ball and he’s a quality young man.”
