JASPER — In their final regular season game of the season, the Lady hatchets were defeated by Jasper on Thursday, 53-31, bringing them to an overall record of 8-11 and 3-3 in conference play.

The Lady Hatchets got off to a great start leading 12-3 into the first quarter, but cold shooting haunted the Lady Hatchets as they scored 14 points in the first quarter and 17 in the final three quarters.

Olivia Brashear led the way with nine points including 3-4 from the 3-point line, Olivia Lengacher had seven points and eight rebounds, Payton Shake and Madi Heacock each had five points,

Chesley Hedrick added three points, and Claire Hatton had two.

“It was great to see the team get off to such a confident start on both ends of the floor. That is an effort we need for four quarters to be able to beat the talented teams such as Jasper,” said WHS coach Gretchen Miles.

“When we could not puts points up, that really made it difficult for us to get into any type of flow on either end of the game. Jasper really picked up their defense in the second quarter and the rest of the game and we just did not respond to that by being more aggressive going to the basket, back door cuts, or making hard cuts to the ball.

“This is a game that we can look at and want to play four quarters as we did the first. We have to put this game behind us, because it now starts our second season where every team is 0-0 and the focus is on Heritage Hills.”

The Big 8 standings ended with Mt. Vernon and Jasper having a 5-1 record and Washington and Princeton with a 3-3 record, Boonville and Mt. Carmel were both 2-4 and Vincennes 1-5.

In the JV game, the Lady Hatchets finised out a very successful season by defeating Jasper. This moved their overall record to an impressive 14-5 and undefeated in conference play.

“This JV team really matured physcially and emotionally throughout the season. Thier overall attitude, and work ethic really helped this group develop as the season progressed. It is definitely going to be a fun group to watch the next three years,” added Miles.
