Phoenix — BASEBALL
PHOENIX (AP) — A fan trying to catch a ball during Major League Baseball's Home Run Derby dangled roughly 20 feet over a pool deck after being caught by his brother and a friend.
Keith Carmickle, from Kingman, was trying to catch a home run hit by Prince Fielder when he stood on a metal table about 18 inches wide. He reached down to get the ball and tumbled over the rail, saved from a big fall when a friend grabbed his legs and his brother wrapped up his arms.
The near miss was eerily similar to what happened to Shannon Stone, the 39-year-old firefighter memorialized in Brownwood, Texas, hours earlier after falling 20 feet to his death Thursday night trying to catch a ball thrown into the stands by Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton.
The Yankees' Robinson Cano won the derby, beating Boston rival Adrian Gonzalez 12-11 in the final round.
Also, Rev. Jesse Jackson urged baseball's All-Stars to speak out against the Arizona immigration law, saying they should follow the example set by Jackie Robinson when he broke the game's color barrier.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Roger Clemens' attorney gave his strongest hint yet that the former pitching star might not testify in his trial on charges of lying to Congress about using performance-enhancing drugs as he pressed potential jurors not to hold Clemens' silence against him.
Several members of the jury pool under selection in federal court said they would weigh evidence from both sides before deciding on a verdict. The judge and Clemens' attorney had to repeatedly explain the legal principle of innocent until proven guilty and that prosecutors alone bear the burden of proving his guilt.

FOOTBALL
NEW YORK (AP) — Less than two weeks before some training camps are scheduled to open, the NFL remains in labor limbo, with only the lawyers for both sides meeting.
Attorneys met in New York to clarify language from previous discussions, and were scheduled to talk again Tuesday. Originally, owners and players were to get together for more negotiations Tuesday, but now won't do so before Wednesday. Several issues are close to resolution, the most significant being the split of total revenues between owners and players.
ATLANTA (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward had glassy, bloodshot eyes and failed field sobriety tests during a traffic stop that landed him a drunken driving charge, according to a police report.
A transit police officer pulled Ward over early Saturday after he left his lane and at one point hit a curb in his Aston Martin, the report says. The officer called a DeKalb County police officer, who wrote in the report that the former Super Bowl MVP and reigning "Dancing With the Stars" champ smelled strongly of alcohol.
Ward told the officer he had had two bottles of Corona beer three hours earlier.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Adam "Pacman" Jones might face up to a year in jail in Nevada for violating a probation stay-out-of-trouble order following his weekend arrest in Cincinnati, the top prosecutor in Las Vegas said.
Clark County District Attorney David Roger said that before he takes the case to a Nevada judge, he'll review police accounts of the arrest of the 27-year-old Cincinnati Bengals cornerback on resisting arrest and misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges at an Ohio bar. Jones was sentenced to one year of probation in February for his role in a 2007 Las Vegas strip club melee that left three people shot.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A lawyer says NFL star Terrell Owens has paid the child support he owes, so the mother of the child is dropping her attempt to hold him in contempt of court. Melanie Paige Smith filed court papers June 20 in Atlanta, saying Owens refused to pay the full $5,000 a month he owes.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — A California deputy shot and killed former Cincinnati Bengals running back David Lee "Deacon" Turner in front of a convenience store after he allegedly hit an officer with a bag holding two cans of beer. Turner, 56, played for the Bengals from 1978 to 1980.
