Bill would check citizenship of Ind. gov’t workers

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A Republican state senator has proposed legislation he says would help verify the citizenship of government workers and people who collect unemployment benefits.

Sen. Mike Delph of Carmel says his proposal would require state agencies to check the citizenship of new employees using an online verification system. He says his plan would also require the state to verify citizenship before determining eligibility for unemployment benefits.

Delph has previously proposed immigration bills that would punish Indiana businesses for hiring illegal workers, but those proposals never won consensus in the Statehouse. Delph says he scaled back the bill this year so that his proposal wouldn’t cost the state any money.
