NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) — A proposal to close four elementary schools in New Albany has been approved for the southern Indiana district.

The New Albany-Floyd County School Board voted 5-2 Thursday night in favor of a package of $6.6 million in budget cuts that included the school closings. The plan shifts fifth graders to the district's three middle schools and other students to its nine remaining elementary schools.

Some parents complained about closing three neighborhood schools within the city limits, while others complained about the board voting on the plan only a week after it was announced.

Middle school science teacher Meg Sullivan, meanwhile, thanked administrators for finding a way to make the budget cuts without removing teachers from classrooms.
