North Daviess destroys Bulldogs 42-14

DUGGER — North Daviess football coach Scott Helms said he wanted to
limit Colton Lengacher’s time on both sides of the ball, and as it turned out it didn’t matter.

The Cougars defeated Union Dugger, 42-14, Friday evening at Bulldog

Field behind a dominant rushing attack from Lengacher and Logan Turpin

in the Southwest Seven Conference game.
On the second offensive play from scrimmage, Lengacher scored the

first of his two touchdowns on a 54-yard scamper to give the Cougars

(2-3, 1-2 Southwest Seven) a 7-0 advantage 59 seconds into the game.

“We felt like we had to get on top of things early tonight or it would

be a nail biter,” Helms said. “We wanted to make things happen and the

running backs found the holes.”

Lengacher wasted no time making his next trip to the end zone.

After North Daviess forced the Bulldogs (2-3, 0-2) into a three and

out, Lengacher scored a five-yard touchdown. Through two drives, the

junior running back had 104 yards, two touchdowns on four carries. The

Cougars allowed one first down on the Bulldogs next possession, before

forcing another punt.

Turpin then got into the action with a five-yard touchdown run to push

the lead to 21-0 after one quarter. The Cougars ran for 155 yards, 136

from Lengacher in the first quarter. The Bulldog offense could only

muster 21 yards of total offense as the Cougars took complete control

of the game.
In the second quarter, Turpin continued the North Daviess dominance on

the ground with two touchdowns and 69 yards in the quarter to push the

Cougars’ advantage to 35-0 at halftime. Lengacher played the first

series of the second half, before exiting with 167 yards on 10 carries

with the two first quarter touchdowns.

The Bulldogs finally got on the board with an eight-yard rushing

touchdown from quarterback Weston Inman, who was starting in place of

senior Sterling Langley for unspecified reasons.

Helms thought Langley not being in the lineup for the Bulldogs changed

the complexion of the game.

“We realize they are a different team without Langley and he really

makes things happen,” Helms said. “They’re a different team to defend

when he’s out there.”

After losing their last three games, all on the road since their 34-28

season opening win against Princeton; the Cougars will now head home

for two games at Cougar Valley against Linton and Wood Memorial.

“The kids were already hungry coming off two tough losses, that was

clear in the first quarter,” Helms said. “We are sitting here with a

football team that’s 2-3 and we’re two plays away from being 4-1. If
you look at the North Central game with a few injuries, we could be

5-0.”

The blowout win allowed Helms to sit most of his starters in the

second half to ensure they will be well rested for the high powered
offense of undefeated Linton.
“They are very good, the cream of the crop in Southern Indiana,” Helms

said. “Whoever plays them you have your hands full. It’s going to be a

long weekend for us coaches as we get ready for them.”
