INDIANAPOLIS — Washington’s Seth Holtsclaw, 9, pulled off a big win last Saturday at the Indiana Young Farmers Association Pedal Pull at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Seth, the son of Byron and Lora Holtsclaw, and reigning Indiana Pedal Tractor Pull Champion, placed first in the 9- to 10-year-old category to qualify for the national pulls. He made three full pulls at weights of 450, 550 and 625 pounds, then a final 38-foot pull of 700 pounds.
“He’ll be competing for the National Pedal Pullers Association pull Aug. 19 at the Indiana State Fair,” Byron explained. “It’s called the Champion of Champions Pull. It’s what he won last year.”
In 2011, as an 8-year-old, Seth pulled 650 pounds 31.8 feet to win the state title and qualify for the national pull in Mitchell, S.D., where he placed seventh.
A full pull is 40 feet. Each competitor uses the same tractor and, when they pull the designated weight the full 40 feet, weight is added and they pull again. The process is repeated until only the top puller remains.
This year, Seth bested 30 boys and girls aged 9-10 in the competition sponsored by Cargill. His closest competitor was a boy who pulled the 700 pounds 36.8 feet; they were the only two to pull 700 pounds at all.
Following the Champion of Champions pull, Seth, who’s undefeated this year, has been invited to a pull in Lawrence, Mich. A first- or second-place ranking at either event will qualify him for the 2012 national competition.
“He’s won both places before,” Byron said. “If he wins one or both of those, he’ll get to go back to Mitchell, South Dakota, for the national.
“In the next two pulls he’ll be facing 10 year-olds and girls. If he makes it to South Dakota, he’ll pull against only 9-year-old boys.”
Seth has a very disciplined exercise program, according to his dad. Though he focuses on one pull at a time, his ultimate goal is to be the top pedal puller in the United States.
“He wants to be No. 1 in the nation,” Byron said. “Every day he’s got that in his mind. He wants the top honor.”
