WASHINGTON —
Helmets will not be hard to find when Washington and North Daviess meet in Hatchet Hollow at 8 p.m.
But there’s one in particular that will get more attention than others.
The Times Herald Highway 57 Helmet is up for grabs as the Hatchets welcome the Cougars for homecoming in the season’s fourth week.
But both Washington coach Kelly Brashear and Cougar mentor Scott Helms have more than helmets and homecoming on their minds.
They each have teams that need a win with defenses that allowed plenty of points last Friday.
Washington dropped to 0-3 with a 50-32 loss at Princeton, while North Daviess (1-2) took a 42-39 defeat at Eastern Greene.
“We struggled against Princeton,” Brashear said.
“We were obviously disappointed with the defense,” Helms said.
Outside speed hurt the Hatchets against a Princeton team that has won its first three games of the campaign after snapping a three-year losing streak that was on the edge of 30 games.
“We’ve actually faced two straight teams (Evansville Bosse and Princeton) that had a lot of speed in the open field,” Brashear said. “It’s caused us a lot of problems.”
“We had been fairly impressed with our defense,” Helms said. “We just couldn’t stop Eastern Greene. I’ve watched film over and over, and I just can’t put a finger on it.”
Both teams have had good moments on offense. There’s certainly nothing wrong with 32, or 39, points in one night.
The Hatchets have shown an ability to run the ball. Tyler Edmiston comes off a good effort at Princeton, and has 270 yards in 49 carries this season. Jaden Arvin and Kane Waggoner are both nearing the 200-yard mark.
Washington is hoping to play with fewer errors.
“We’re trying to cut down on our mistakes,” Brashear said. “We played pretty well offensively at Princeton.”
The Cougars also have running backs to spare. Colton Lengacher has 416 yards this season on 34 attempts. Logan Turpin is close behind with 279 yards.
“I think Logan is in the same class as Ryan Webster (North Daviess’ leading career rusher with over 5,400 yards) and Roger Callahan,” Helms said. “We didn’t need to put the ball in the air against Eastern. We really were never in passing situations.”
Both teams have players hurt who may or may not be ready. Jalen Madison is doubtful after a head injury at Princeton. The Cougars are hoping to get fellow lineman Ezra Thompson back.
The teams are built with similar ideas. Both want to run. Both want to play better defense than last week.
More importantly, both want a win, very badly.
“I’ll take it ugly, pretty, we need to get a win and start feeling good about ourselves,” Brashear said. “The coaching staff is disappointed, the players are disappointed, with the start we’ve had. Both of us (each team) feel the need to get a victory. I don’t think anyone is going to run away with it.”
“Washington is going to be sky high,” Helms said. “They’re (Washington) hungry, very hungry, for a first win. I’m not sure we have the same athleticism as Bosse or Princeton, but we have to be just as hungry.”

IU still working towards sixth banner
Monday night in Atlanta, Louisville won the school’s first National Championship since the year I was born - 1986. This accomplishment is significant to Indiana basketball fans, because the last two times the Cardinals cut down the nets (1980, 1986), the Hoosiers did it the following year. The stat, of course means nothing, other than both schools had strong programs in the 1980s.
