WASHINGTON — Barbara Joan Charles, 77, of Washington, died at 9:55 a.m. Thursday at Emerald House. Born April 1, 1935, in Daviess County, she was the daughter of Noble and Nora (McCrary) Matteson. A 1953 graduate of Washington High School, she was a homemaker. She attended New Hope Christian Church and was a member of Women of the Moose and American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl RaNae and Kenny Wright of Washington; a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley Kent and Carolyn Charles of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Jaret Wright and wife Jessica, Tim Wright and wife Amber, Keith Charles, Craig Charles, Aaron Charles, Caitlin Charles, Tiffany Flick and husband Steve, Mariah Charles and Tyson “TJ” Charles; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Dottie Grannan and Sue and husband Dave Gingerich, all of Washington; brothers and sister-in-law, Dave and wife Carol Matteson, Joe Matteson and Marty Matteson, all of Washington. Her husband, Robert Lee Charles, whom she married June 13, 1953, died Nov. 18, 2001. Her parents; a son, Kevin Jay Charles; a sister, Dana Louise Matteson; and a brother, Jesse Odell Matteson, are also deceased. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Gill Chapel, with Pastor Joe Coquillard officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery in Petersburg. Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Condolences may be made to the family online at www.gillsince1872.com
