Loogootee OKs 2013 budget

LOOGOOTEE — No one spoke Tuesday night during a public hearing on the Loogootee School Corporation’s proposed $9.9 million budget for 2013.

The budget, along with a proposed tax rate of $1.47 per $100 of assessed valuation, has already been advertised and will be forwarded to the state Department of Local Government Finance for final approval.

Superintendent Larry Weitkamp said he always advertises the tax rate high, knowing it will be reduced by the state once the local assessed valuation figures have been determined. He expects the final rate to be about 90 cents.

Last year Weitkamp said Loogootee advertised a rate of $1.75, but the final figure was 84 cents.

It is common for governmental entities to advertise tax rates high each year, because state law prohibits them from being raised afterward; they can only be lowered.

The proposed budget includes $6.9 million for the General Fund, about $1 million for Capital Projects and $600,000 for Bus Transportation.

School board member Shawn Howell was absent due to work-related travel.

The board met an hour earlier than usual so members could later attend the home volleyball match against Washington.

In other business the board:

• Approved a trip by the Beta Club to the annual state convention in Indianapolis Nov. 9-10. Weitkamp said the kids always behave very well at these conventions and also perform well.

• Approved numerous extracurricular activity appointments, involving both athletics and academics.

• Learned that 25 teachers and administrators were involved with workshops concerning a language arts curriculum update.
