Jasper, weather spell defeat for Hatchets

JASPER — JASPER - Cold, wet, and Wildcat was not a winning trifecta for the Washington Hatchets on Friday at Jasper.

A driving rain storm on a cold night at Jerry Brewer Alumni Stadium and an unbeaten Jasper squad spelled defeat for Washington to tune of 47-16 in Big 8 Conference football action. In a game played in a driving rain which made the field a mucky, brown and green mess even before the contest began, the elements didn’t bother Class 4A No. 2 Jasper (8-0, 5-0) as the Wildcats ran wild against Washington (2-6, 0-6).

Cole Sermersheim ran for 138 yards and two first half touchdowns as the Wildcats led 35-0 at halftime. Nick Gobert added a pair of scoring runs for Jasper, while the first Wildcats score came on the game’s opening play from scrimmage as Jasper quarterback Nolan Ahrens hit Austin Alles for a short completion that turned into a 70-yard touchdown reception.

Washington, meanwhile, found the going tough against a Wildcat defense that was surrendering just 8.1 ppg coming into the game. The treacherous footing conspired with the Jasper defense to hold WHS to just 68 yards of offense in the first half, with most of that yardage coming on the Hatchets’ final drive of the half, the only WHS possession which crossed midfield in the opening half.

Washington did dent the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter. Lining up in the Wildcat formation at quarterback, Parsons turned a broken play into a 60-yard run, then finished off the drive two plays later with a two-yard touchdown run. Edmiston carried in for two points, leaving the Hatchets on the short end of a 41-8 score.

A Jasper fumble by Ben Moore on the Wildcats next possession set up Parsons again, this time from 37 yards out as Jasper had mostly reserves on the defensive side of the ball. Edmiston added another run to make the score 41-16 with 5:45 to play.

Parsons finished with 99 yards on 16 carries to lead the Hatchet offense, which netted 116 yards in the second half. Edmiston added 42 rushing yards on the ground for WHS, while Dalton Devine added 54 return yards on five kickoff returns

Sermersheim finished with 166 yards on 18 carries. Kade Elliot added a nine-yard run in the third quarter for the Wildcats, while Moore scoring on a 42-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Washington returns home to face North Knox on Friday.
