Thomas Loyd

WASHINGTON — Thomas Gordon Loyd, 80, of Washington, passed away at 6:38 p.m. Thursday at home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born Dec. 12, 1931, in Washington, he was the son of Ollie and Iva (Small) Loyd. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, bringing home a National Defense Medal, China Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of the VFW. A laborer in the steel industry, he worked at McCord’s until 1976 and retired from Hoover Precision in 2000. Carpentry was his second job and hobby.

Survivors include his wife, Doris S. (Burris) Loyd, whom he married Jan. 26, 1957; a daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Todd Church; grandchildren, Ty Church (Autumn), Joshua Church (Brittney) and Sierra Church; great-grandchildren, BriLee Church and Josie Church; daughter-in-law, Kim Loyd; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by a son, Gregory Scott Loyd; sisters, Eva Chastain, Rosemary Chapman and Betty Loyd; and brothers, Donald Loyd and Paul Loyd. He was the last of the Loyd family.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Gill Funeral Home, with Pastor Kris Beasley officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 11 a.m. until time of the service.
