Community gets first taste of new interstate

WASHINGTON — The public will get its first official look on the new Interstate 69 Saturday. But not with cars, but feet.

All along the interstate, towns and counties will be hosting I-69 Community Days. Daviess County will have two events Saturday, in Odon and near Washington on CR 100N.

“We know this is our future and we want to celebrate it,” Daviess County Convention and Vistor’s Bureau Executive Director Samantha Bobbitt said. “We want to celebrate and feature this great thing for our area.”

For the Washington event, the Burkhart Foundation Steps for Hope 5K/10K will kickoff the celebration at 9 a.m. The run is a fundraiser for the Travis Burkhart Foundation that gives help for families facing medical hardships.

At 10 a.m. on, visitors can have a lot of fun with such events as a long driving contest, inflatables and games for children, horse and buggy rides, bike rides, classic car displays and more. Food vendors will also be

Also starting Saturday will be the Daviess County Historic Geocaching Trail. The trail, according to Bobbitt, links sites around the county via GPS.

Once a person or group reaches that site, a phone number will be available to call and learn historical details on the site. Several who are registered on geocaching.com have said they are ready to visit.

To visit the Washington I-69 Community Day, go to CR 100N and an access road will be there to get on the interstate. The event will be from CR 100N to 200N. Do not go to the interchange at the U.S. 50 bypass to get on the interstate. It is still under construction.

A donation of a non-perishable food item, like a canned good, is asked. The donations will be given to Feed My Sheep.

After the festivities on the interstate, an after party will be held at Mulligan’s, 908 Bedford Road, from 6 p.m. to midnight. Local bands American Pie and Overboard are scheduled to appear.

In Odon, the events start with a 5K run to promote breast cancer awareness and at noon, the festivities will begin.

On tap for the Odon celebration are skydivers, a loved ones walk for alzheimer’s awareness, bicycle ride and motorcycles from county and state law enforcement organizations.

Food will also be provided. A shuttle service will be provided from North Daviess High School.

Events are also being held in Greene, Pike and Gibson counties and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels has declared Saturday to be I-69 Community Day statewide.

“The new I-69 corridor holds tremendous promise for the future,” Daniels said in a release. “The interstate will result in new job creation, expanded economic opportunity, faster and safer travel, great connectivity and more.

“Communities across southwest Indiana have been waiting on this interstate for decades and I’m glad that we can provide them with this special opportunity to celebrate before it opens to traffic.”
