Parsons reaches milestone in WHS win

Moves on in sectional play

WASHINGTON — Trey Parsons moved past the 3,000 yard rushing mark for his career and Washington dominated the Pike Central Chargers on the way to a 43-9 win in Sectional 24 opening round action at Hatchet Hollow on Friday.

Parsons reached rarefied territory in the Hatchet record book against Pike Central (2-10).

With 272 yards on 25 carries, Parsons now sits at 3,031 yards for his career, making the senior only the fourth back in Hatchet history to top the 3,000 yard mark for a career along with Joe McCormick, Bud Garland, and Derek Graber.

It was a three-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that put Parsons, who scored four touchdowns for Washington (4-6), over the 3,000 mark.

Parsons at his best is one of the state’s best and one of the best Washington coach Kelly Brashear has coached.

“He really had another big night tonight. I always talk about his field vision, but his ability to move laterally and move into that small open hole … I’ve not coached too many kids that have ability, and he does,” said Brashear, who guided the Hatchets to their seventh straight opening round sectional win on Friday. “But then again, he better be taking those offensive lineman out to dinner because they opened big holes up there tonight.”

As Brashear noted, Parsons and all the Hatchet backs — WHS racked up 432 yards on the ground benefited from strong line play.

The Washington offensive line of tight ends Cody Milligan and Edrwin Revolorio, tackles Eli Betancourt, Jeffrey Harrawood, and James Sidebottom, guards Kirk Crecelius and Jalen Madison, and center Eric Long. It’s been a group that has persevered despite numerous injuries and position shifts this season.

“They really have persevered. We’ve kind of been a makeshift line all year long due to injuries,” said Brashear.

“Almost all of them have played guard and tackle. Our blocking scheme is not a complicated one, but there are some changes there in moving from guard to tackle. Our kids have done a good job of adjusting to sometimes a weekly new assignment up front.”

Tyler Edmiston added 63 yards for the Hatchets on nine carries, while Tyler Walls netted 21 yards on 2 carries and Jaden Arvin rushed for 79 yards on eight carries, including a 36-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Walls also converted all five of his extra point attempts.

Washington led 21-6 at the half as the Hatchets scored 21 straight points after the Chargers took an early 6-0 lead.

Pike Central took that quick lead when Kegan Aldridge went 60 yards on a fake punt on the Chargers’ first possession for a touchdown.

That lead didn’t last long. Thought the following Hatchet possession ended on a Parsons fumble deep in Charger territory,

Washington would score on its two possessions following that turnover. Parsons did the honors on both drives, the first on a 16-yard run late in the first quarter and the second score thanks to a six-yard run early in the second quarter.

Parsons, who had topped the 1,000 yard figure for the season by halftime, added a 21-yard run late in the second quarter as the Hatchets led 21-6 heading into the locker room.

Arvin scored on a 36-yard run for WHS in the second half, while quarterback Jake Brashear hit Cody Milligan for a 19-yard scoring strike on fourth down in the third quarter as the Hatchets led 43-6 after three periods of action.

Levi Richardson contributed a 40-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for Pike Central.

Before Friday’s game, there was a moment of silence for former Hatchet football coach Dick McClure, who passed away last week.

Washington will face the winner of Friday’s Evansville Memorial-Princeton game in second round action on Friday. Regardless of the winner of that game, the Hatchets will be on the road in the second round.
