The North Daviess girls cross country team won the cross country meet at White River Valley. The Times Herald incorrectly reported they had finished in second place.
Hatchets win Northview Invite
BRAZIL — The Washington boys tennis team won Saturday’s Northview Invitational, finishing with 26 points, eight more than second place finisher and host, Northview.
New Castle came in third with nine points and Sullivan rounded out the foursome with two.
Hatchets’ first singles Lucas Miller defeated Sullivan’s Luke Willis, 6-3, 6-2, and Northview’s Darin Clark, 6-1, 6-4.
Two singles Matthew Pancake defeated Jake Pirtle, 6-4, 6-0, and Northview’s Bryce Brittan, 6-2, 6-0. Three singles Jacob Luttrell defeated New Castle’s Dusty Vincent, 6-1, 6-0, and Northview’s Damon Barr 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, Tyler Stoll and Garrett Burton won, 6-0, 6-0, and 6-2, 6-2, against Northview. Jonathan Harner and Jake Bedwell fell to Northview, 2-6, 6-3, 6-7(4), and to Sullivan, 6-2, 6-0.
Mercer shoots 93 at Regional
EVANSVILLE — Washington’s Kayla Mercer shot 93 in the girls golf regional at Eagle Valley Saturday.
Mercer had qualified as an individual the previous weekend at the girls sectional held at the Country Club of Old Vincennes.
Jasper won the team event with a score of 323. Following Jasper were: Castle 331; Evansville North 337; Bloomington South 338; Columbus North 340; Floyd Central 341; North Posey 351, Columbus East 352; Evansville Memorial 353, Madison 355, Vincennes Rivet 357; New Albany 374; Bedford North Lawrence 378; Corydon Central 390; Salem 392; Springs Valley 401, Gibson Southern 411; and North Knox 433.
Jasper, Castle and Evansville North advanced to the state finals.
Madison’s Amanda Detmer was medalist with a round of 69.
Players advancing as individuals were: Detmer; Cherise Otter, Bloomington South, 77; Emma Fisher, Bloomington South, 77; Eliza Hudson, Floyd Central, 77; and Sydney Anderson, Columbus North, 77.
Loogootee takes Jasper Invite
JASPER — Class A No. 4 Loogootee won all four of its volleyball matches to win the Jasper Invitational Saturday.
In their opening match, the Lions (20-4) defeated Castle 16-25, 25-14, 25-16. Michala Beasley led in kills with 14, Demi Richardson added 30 assists, Abby Ackerman had six digs and Kailye Robbins scored eight points.
Loogootee then beat Evansville Harrison 25-12, 25-10. Beasley had 12 kills, Demi Richardson added 27 assists and five digs.
In the third, the Lions beat Sullivan 25-13, 25-15. Beasley had 12 kills, Richardson had 22 assists and Abby Ackerman scored 13 points.
In the tournament finale, the Lions beat Jasper 25-21, 25-19. Beasley had 15 kills, Richardson registered her second 30 assist match of the day and Robbins scored 11 points.
Lions split two matches
LOOGOOTEE — The Loogootee Lions boys tennis team split two team matches during Saturday.
The Lions were swept in all five matches against Mt. Vernon. Lions’ first singles Conner Wittmer won six games total against Jevin Redman losing, 6-4, 6-2.
The rest of the team won a combined seven games against Mt. Vernon.
The Lions junior varsity also lost to Mt. Vernon by a score of 3-1. Landon Diamond and Seth Wagler defeated Nick Courey and Grant Scheller for Loogootee’s only win.
In their second match of the day, the Lions varsity squad defeated North Posey three game to two.
Conner Wittmer was the lone singles winner for Loogootee, while both doubles teams were victorious. Tyler Booker and Waylon Matthews won 6-1, 6-3. Hayden Bell and Will Nonte won 6-0, 6-4.
Following suit, the Lions junior varsity defeated North Posey to 2-1 by winning both of their doubles matches.
Washington plays to two ties
EVANSVILLE — The Washington girls varsity and junior varsity soccer teams both played to 1-1 ties Saturday at Evansville Harrison.
The Hatchets varsity squad (7-5-1) got their goal from Elaynna Brashear on their way to their first tie of the season. The Hatchets still have road matches against Princeton and Bloomington South, before senior night Sept. 27 against Evansville Reitz
WC girls win match
The Washington Middle School girls soccer team defeated N.E. Dubois, 3-0, Friday.
The Cardinals (3-1-3) got goals from Lexi Hornback and Christina Smith. The Washington Middle School boys soccer team lost to N.E. Dubois 5-0 to fall to 0-6 on the season.
On Saturday, the Washington Catholic middle school lost, 5-0, to Mount Carmel, Ill., in a co-ed game.
Washington YMCA wins
The Washington 5th and 6th grade YMCA Football team won against the Vincennes White team, 43-28. Grant Niehaus had six touchdowns, Tyson Wright had two one-point conversions. Noah Alford had a one-point conversion and Brock Melton a one one-point conversion.
