ELNORA —
North Daviess was hoping to find a few points against Bloomfield Friday in the tennis sectional championship on the Cougars’ courts, but those points proved difficult to come by.
Bloomfield won the North Daviess Sectional by a 4-1 margin against the hosts Friday. That was the same margin as Bloomfield defeated North Daviess in their regular season meeting.
Both matches ended in similar fashion, although the Cougars were hoping that an extra point in a singles and doubles would swing the tide.
“I was hoping we would have some opportunities, but Bloomfield really came out ready to play from the first serve,” North Daviess coach Brock Higgins said.
“I felt like we would give ourselves a small chance, and be able to capitalize on that. We weren’t able to.”
Scott Woodruff did his part with a straight 6-2 victory against Alex Chestnut at second singles. Woodruff’s point was the one North Daviess collected in the regular season.
“Scott has stepped up for us all year,” Higgins said. “Most of the matches we win, we need his point.”
Lane Heshelman and Trevor Wikle started well at first doubles, but they fell to Andrew Dawson-Jared Myers, 6-3, 6-2.
“ I thought our one doubles started pretty well.” Higgins said.
“I thought they played pretty well. Their (Bloomfield’s) one doubles really stepped up and took the bull by the horns.”
Higgins was looking for first singles player Evan Hawk to maybe find one of those points, but Bloomfield’s Del Carter was having nothing of that, winning, 6-1, 6-1.
“I thought we might have a chance at first singles, I really did with Evan,” Higgins said. “Del (Carter) just really came ready to play.”
Hunter Heaton and Evans Fuller also had success against Lane Fulton and Tyler Hostetter at second doubles, 6-0, 6-1.
“Their second doubles didn’t really give our team a chance to get a sniff at a point every now and then,” Higgins said. “We didn’t give ourselves a chance to get a feel at second doubles. They just came ready to play.”
The one match to go three sets came at third singles.
Bloomfield’s Conner Dowden won the first set, 6-2. But Cougar Braden Lawyer rallied to win the second, 6-1.
Dowden then won the third, 6-2.
“I felt really good about third singles,” Higgins said. “Braden played his heart out, he just couldn’t get it done.”
North Daviess had defeated Linton in the sectional’s opening round Thursday, while Bloomfield did the same to White River Valley Wednesday.
“I think our younger guys will get to hitting right now, and get ready for the next season,” Higgins said.
The Cardinals now advance to the Jasper Regional, Tuesday.
Bloomfield will face the winner of the Vincennes Sectional. Washington and Vincennes Rivet play for that championship.

IU still working towards sixth banner
Monday night in Atlanta, Louisville won the school’s first National Championship since the year I was born - 1986. This accomplishment is significant to Indiana basketball fans, because the last two times the Cardinals cut down the nets (1980, 1986), the Hoosiers did it the following year. The stat, of course means nothing, other than both schools had strong programs in the 1980s.
