Fireworks still on for Washington 4th

Martin County still can have fireworks

WASHINGTON — Washington and Daviess County will not be joining their neighbors in banning fireworks this upcoming Fourth of July holiday.

Also, the city of Washington will hold its annual fireworks display Wednesday night.

“We are monitoring (the situation) and see what we ought to do,” Washington Mayor Joe Wellman said.

Wellman said Monday he met with city fire officials twice to gauge whether to enact a ban for not. Although there is a burn ban in Daviess County, state law prohibits local government to bar fireworks without proclaiming an emergency declaration.

Daviess County Commissioner and Washington Township Volunteer Fire Chief Tony Wichman said Sunday’s brief storm did not do much to help the drought. He believed the department will be on stand-by Wednesday in case there are emergencies.

Martin County also will allow fireworks this week and the public celebration at West Boggs will go ahead as scheduled, according to Martin Emergency Management Director Monty Wolfe.

“You’ve just got to be really, really careful,” Wolfe said.

Wolfe also suggested that if one were to light fireworks, a hose or a nearby bucket of water should be availble.

So far, many counties near Daviess has declared the emergency and banned private fireworks displays including Dubois, Pike, Greene, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties. Some, like Gibson County, have allowed public displays like city displays. Dubois County has barred all displays, private and public. Knox County is one who has not banned fireworks, but asks only ground fireworks and no aerial displays be used.

There were few at the TNT Fireworks stand in the Walmart Supercenter parking lot. Employees there said sales are slow, due to either the hot weather or the dry conditions.

Washington’s display is set for 10:02 p.m. Wednesday and the West Boggs show is set for dusk today, around 9:15 p.m.
